Our very own student, Keanna Flowers, graduated high school last spring and had an essay published in the Make It Better Foundation Magazine! She is one of the founding members of Bowen Harvest–a student-run hydroponic farm serving the Altgeld community. We are so proud of our students! https://lnkd.in/eFDUDbrG

By The Hand has after-school program locations in Altgeld-Murray, Austin, Cabrini-Green, Englewood and is currently building a sixth site in North Austin. We partner with 17 Chicago Public Schools. Children are recommended by local principals who are failing in reading. In the 2019 school year, 1,523 kids were enrolled with an overall average of 3.04 GPA. "When we have a full container, we’re looking at about 4,000 heads of lettuce that we’re currently growing," said Joe Jones, senior director of?entrepreneurship at Bowen Harvest. "The cycle is about 4,000 and that equates to about four acres a year." Since opening the container farm last March, eight harvest have been produced. Thanks Fox 32 Chicago for sharing the exciting news in our Altgeld community! https://lnkd.in/e67pBwbX

Congratulations to our Executive VP and COO, Rev. Dr. Marco Allan Tinor, on being recognized as a 2024 Notable Black Leader by Crain's Chicago Business! The individuals honored in Crain’s Notable Black Leaders represent all industries and communities: C-suite executives and investors, advisers helping our neighbors pursue higher education and secure social services, attorneys leading law firms and advocates leading the way toward change. From magnates to mentors, they’re working to enrich our communities and our city. By The Hand Club is blessed to have Marco lead our organization, alongside Donnita Travis, as he helps our kids in under-resourced neighborhoods have abundant life—mind, body and soul. Marco is a wonderful role model for kids as he shows them how the power of his one life can make a significant impact on students and our community.

On August 13, 2024, Austin Harvest officially opened its permanent building to bring fresh food, hope and healing to the Austin community. Come shop the market, open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 12:00pm to 6:00pm at 423 N. Laramie Ave. The fresh food market grew out of a desire for youth to lead the way for positive community change. Due to decades of racial inequities highlighted by the killing of George Floyd and the COVID-19 crisis, By The Hand youth gathered in healing circles with local police and professional athletes to process recent violence and brainstorm solutions for their community. The students challenged the stakeholders to think about systematic reform but also expressed the need to do something now. This led to the idea of Austin Harvest and the transformation of a looted liquor store into a fresh market. For four years, Austin Harvest was a seasonal pop-up market, but now, our student entrepreneurs are serving their community year round!? https://lnkd.in/eZWRUztF

Thanks for having us–such a great conversation!
“These data help us imagine what can be. We understand that we got here because of policies that were decided by folks in power decades ago. It’s our turn to decide what policies we want to shape our future, so we’re not here again," said Andrea Sáenz, President & CEO of The Chicago Community Trust. In a segment for WTTW/Chicago PBS, Andrea joined Darrick Hamilton of the Institute on Race, Power and Political Economy, Brenda Palms of North Lawndale Employment Network, and Andraya Yousfi of By The Hand Club For Kids to discuss the new "Color of Wealth in Chicago" report launched this week. #ColorOfWealth #Chicago #Philanthropy Tune in to learn more: https://lnkd.in/g8yEEaWk

Thank you to our amazing partners Old National Bank for kicking off By The Hand Club For Kids Annual Bike Across Chicago at our newest location in North Austin! Amazing Cheerleaders you were.????
By The Hand Club For Kids helps support kids from kindergarten through college. Today cyclists rode 50 miles across Chicago, stopping at all 6 locations to raise money and awareness for the kids! Rain can’t put a damper on a wonderful cause! The riders had huge smiles on their faces and volunteers from Old National Bank did too, as we cheered them on as they arrived to our location.
