Dr. Helen Dickens was a champion for equitable healthcare. As the first Black woman admitted to the American College of Surgeons, she paved the way for Black women in medicine. This #WomensHistoryMonth, we celebrate trailblazers like her!?

As #BlackHistoryMonth concludes, we reflect on the progress inspired by pioneers like Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first Black woman physician in the U.S. Dr. Crumpler’s work reminds us of the importance of health equity—a mission that remains unfinished. Black women continue to face disproportionate barriers in cancer care, from delayed diagnoses to financial hardships. Read our latest article to learn about the strides being made, the gaps that remain, and how programs like BWTEotR’s Patient Navigation initiative are making a difference. Together, we can honor the past and create a future of equitable care for all. #HealthcareEquity #BlackWomenThrive #CancerCare #HealthJustice

Last month, we gathered with the incredible minds and hearts that make Black Women Thriving East of the River (BWTEoTR) a reality. Our Implementing Partners Meeting was a time to celebrate our accomplishments from 2024, align on our 2025 goals, and reaffirm our shared commitment to the Black women of Wards 7 & 8. It was a day filled with gratitude, inspiration, and warmth made even better by the delicious food from Sapodilla’s Caribbean Restaurant & Catering (because community work thrives on good food and connection!). As we step into 2025, we are more committed than ever to driving real change, fostering collaboration, and ensuring that Black women in Wards 7 & 8 have access to the healthcare, opportunities, and support they deserve. To our incredible implementing partners, thank you! Your dedication fuels this work, and we are proud to walk this journey together. Let’s keep building!
