Bates | Wilder McGee PC will be closed tomorrow in observance of Good Friday, however, I'd love to take the opportunity to highlight what the BWM team has accomplished in the last 2 weeks: - 5 in-office depositions; - 2 full-day mediations (one requiring travel); - 1 half-day hearing; - 1 bench trial (where Kristen Bates received judgment in our client's favor; - 2 commercial real estate closings/transactions; and - handled our personal lives at home. The profession we've chosen is not easy and weeks like this are exhausting, but I am incredibly proud of how hard our team (Lisa Prado, Nathan Muha-Prado, and Brittney Gibson) works to provide our clients with solid and unmatched legal representation. We truly care. We would be totally foolish if we forgot to thank Frankie, our wonderful, emotionally unwell, and protective office dog. In honor of the ONE year anniversary of my and Kristen Bates’s partnership in Bates | Wilder McGee PC, I want to take a moment to highlight her trial victory this week, but also shed light on why I think she is the best litigator in the room (at least in every room I've been in). Not only does Kristen have nearly 13 years of litigation (state, federal & arbitration/mediation) experience within the business, real estate, foreclosure, HOA/POA, construction, and probate law worlds -- her secret weapon is her willingness and confidence to take on any case, no matter the size or opposing parties, as long as the law supports her position. Then, once she decides she will take it on, she maintains this hauntingly stoic poker face and impossible-to-read calmness until she's in the courtroom, then, it's a true nightmare for the opposing party. She prepares thoroughly, knows the law supporting her case fluidly, tabs any, every, and all relevant code books/case law, and is ready to support her position eloquently and persuasively. It is truly the perfect mix of hard work and inherent talent that many litigators work very hard to master, and she does it so well. Prior to her agreeing to be my law partner, she was my most-dreaded opposing counsel because her poker face coupled with unmatched courtroom skill and preparation left me furious...mostly because I knew she would beat me and I do not like to lose. Not only am I grateful that we can offer our clients this level of litigation representation, I am also thrilled that I'll never have to try a case against her again. Kristen successfully defended our client this week on suit on a sworn account -- she was persistent, held opposing counsel to the letter of the law, did not waiver to baseless threats, and ultimately prevailed in our client's favor. Then, the next day, she turned around and drove hours to attend an in-person mediation that she arduously prepared for before the trial. THIS is what makes her the best attorney in the room - she doesn't make excuses and treats every client and case like it's the only one she is working on. Happy ONE YEAR anniversary to the partnership of Bates | Wilder McGee PC Kristen Bates and I have worked incredibly hard over this last year to build a solid foundation as partners to support our thriving firm and its continued growth. We have poured so much into building this partnership and feel grateful to have a successful year under our belts and many more ahead.
