It's Cat Day today at BPZOO!! It has been a very big year at the Buttonwood Park Zoo. We’ve expanded our volunteer program, launched new outreach and education initiatives, and broken ground on construction projects to expand and improve the work we do in New Bedford and beyond. Our community and our impact continue to grow. Read full blog article on cat conservation by guest blogger, Kelsey Sanders, Education Specialist at BPZOO. We are starting a “Behind the Scenes @ BPZoo” series and there is no better staff member to kick this series off with then our very own Dr. Emmy!! It is also her 1 year workiversary!! Dr. Emmy is the veterinarian here at BPZoo! Let's dive in... Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself!? A: I am originally from MA, but have moved around a lot for my education and veterinary training programs. I received my Bachelor of Science in Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences from The Pennsylvania State University. Then, I received my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. A few years later, I found my way back to MA, and then started as the zoo veterinarian at Buttonwood Park Zoo. Becoming a zoo veterinarian has been my dream job since I was a little girl, so after a lot of hard work, it is very rewarding?to see my dreams come true!?? ?? Q: What is the coolest thing you've done while working at BPZoo?? A: My coolest experiences since starting at Buttonwood Park Zoo have been building relationships with the animals in our care. Working closely with the keepers to build that level of trust with the animals so we can train for voluntary participation in?medical procedures has been my favorite part of my job.? ?? Q: What is your favorite animal if you had to pick ONE?? A: I physically cannot answer this question; I love them all so much! But, in general, I tend to love carnivores, so felids, canids, mustelids (like otters), ursids (bears), and pinnipeds (seals, sea lions).?? ?? Q: How long have you worked at BPZoo?? A: 1 year! Today is my 1 year anniversary!!???? ?? Q: Where is your favorite place to eat in New Bedford?? A: Quahog Republic Whaler's Tavern - they have the best Fish n Chips in town in my opinion. ?? Q: What is a cool fact about BPZoo or what you do that not many people know?? A: I love to teach! We have a veterinary student externship program and I enjoy working with those soon to be veterinarians and watching them grow. ?? Q: What do you like doing when you're not working?? A: I love disc golfing as it is a great combination of exercise and getting to explore nature. I also love going to concerts when my favorite bands are in town. Thanks for the info Dr. Emmy, and happy one year anniversary! We are so lucky to have you! bpzoo.org

The Buttonwood Park Zoo is proud to announce the birth of two Canada Lynx kittens, one male, one female, on May 4th, 2024. This is the first successful litter for eleven-year-old female Canada lynx, Sylvie and thirteen-year-old male, Hutch. Born covered in fur, but with closed ears and eyes, the kittens remained behind the scenes with Sylvie as they developed. At two weeks their eyes opened, and at approximately eight weeks old they had their first evaluation by BPZOO’s veterinarian staff. “Both kittens are healthy, very curious, and great climbers,” said Dr. Emmy Budas, BPZOO’s veterinarian. “Their personalities were on full display during the exam, with the female showing her sweet and gentle side, while her brother was full of spunk and not afraid to speak his mind.” The veterinarian and animal care team have also been impressed with how attentive Sylvie has been as a first-time mom. Sylvie arrived at BPZOO in 2014 based on a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP). Hutch arrived in 2021 after the passing of the?beloved Calgary, a male Canada lynx who called BPZOO home for 11 years. The goal of the SSP is to cooperatively manage lynx populations within AZA accredited zoos to ensure a healthy and genetically diverse population. There are currently 65 Canada lynx residing in 28 AZA accredited institutions, including the four here at BPZOO. The kittens are now beginning to explore the habitat, which is located just beyond the bison pasture. The Buttonwood Park Zoological Society is proud to announce that we raised just over $90,000 at our annual Soiree at the Zoo. As we reflect on the achievements of the past year and look forward to the exciting opportunities ahead, we recognize that BPZOO continues to be a place of wonder and learning, a sanctuary for endangered species, and a hub for community engagement. This would not be possible without the support of our generous supporters. For the world’s wildlife, for our children, and for our community – thank you! We could not do this without you.
