At their annual awards banquet earlier in November, the economic revitalization nonprofit group Butler Downtown celebrated an eventful year for the city of Butler and honored some of the people and businesses that make the city’s main street special. Butler Downtown group reflected on some of its accomplishments over the past 12 month These include the construction of the full-scale Bantam Jeep sculpture project in June, as well as the success of events such as Sips in the City and Carved in Ice. Planning commission chairman Tracy Frampton said the developers have brought plans for the new Dollar General location to the township’s attention only in the last few months. “We decided not to do any conditional approval at this point,” Frampton said. “We’re just waiting for them to come back to us.” Frampton says there still are some issues left to be resolved before the township can take action on the new store.

Dozens gathered to celebrate the new home of Butler County’s Community Partnership at an open house Thursday, Nov. 14. Community Partnership is a grant-funded community action agency that coordinates and develops initiatives in the areas of agriculture, food security and economic development. The name Vernon Laing Wise Jr. has been synonymous with the Butler Eagle for more than six decades, but the towering voice remembered by so many was silenced on the evening of Nov. 14, when Wise died at age 95. At the time of his death, his name was being announced in Hershey, as one of 100 media magnates inducted into the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association Hall of Fame at the association’s 100th anniversary gala. “I had the opportunity to come in and work a few hours, and 30 years later I have learned so much and developed myself,” said Mark Bachman, operational excellence coordinator at Butler Technologies. “I can tell you it’s OK to start at the ground level and build your career.” During the first Friday in October every year, manufacturers around the country open their doors to the public and students for National Manufacturing Day to help inspire and usher in the next generation of industry workers.
