Last week, ButcherBox co-hosted a crucial briefing on Capitol Hill titled “Why Major Meat Companies and Hog Farmers Oppose the EATS Act,” in collaboration with our partners Niman Ranch and True Story Foods.? This high-stakes event featured speakers from across the food system—including our founder, Michael Salguero, farmers from our supply chain, our partners at Niman and True Story as well as an agricultural economist — all of whom underscored that overturning California’s Prop 12 and Massachusetts’ Q3 ballot measures would be a disaster from farm to fork.? ? While on the Hill, we also met with several Congressional offices and the USDA to emphasize the major threat this bill poses to farmers, businesses, and consumers alike. Since 2023, ButcherBox has been working to raise awareness of the dangerous nature of the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act, including releasing an open letter to Congress that was signed by Whole Foods Market, Applegate, Thrive Market and 20+ other food companies. Despite our pushback, the bill language was included in the House Agriculture Committee’s version of the current Farm Bill, making our advocacy even more urgent.? Put simply: The EATS Act would reverse common-sense, democratically-adopted standards for farm animal welfare—which goes against ButcherBox’s mission of protecting the people, animals, and planet that make our food system thrive. That’s why we’re proud to stand against this harmful bill and will continue opposing it until it has been defeated.? Last weekend the ButcherBox team was in Iowa for the 26th Annual Niman Ranch Hog Farmer Appreciation Celebration. A true celebration of the 600+ farmers that make up the Niman Ranch Network and all the work they do to raise their animals with care. The weekend was filled with farm tours, inspiring, educational content led by the Food Tank team, incredible food, and an appearance from the renowned animal welfare advocate, Dr. Temple Grandin. It was not only a celebration of all the dedication and work of the Niman Ranch farmers, but also served to recognize the great work young farmers are committed to doing in furthering their education through the Next Generation Foundation Scholarship program. ButcherBox has been a proud supporter of the scholarship foundation since 2019, contributing $350,000 to date, and we feel incredibly honored to help inspire younger generations of farmers to come back to their family farms and raise animals right. #ButcherBox #AnimalWelfare #FarmerAppreciation
