It may seem difficult to imagine but in America, it's been slightly more than 100 years since women were given the power to vote. That was in 1920. In 1980, National Women's History Week was celebrated the week of March 8. Four days after Texas declared independence from Mexico in 1836 the Alamo fell. On the night before the battle, Col. William B. Travis gathered his men and explained the Texians were vastly outnumbered. Legend holds that Travis drew a line in the dirt with his saber and asked those willing to die for the cause to cross and stand alongside him. Susannah Dickinson was one of the noncombatants whose life was spared. Every saga needs a storyteller and Dickinson confirmed Travis gave his men the choice of escaping or staying to fight and die for the cause. On this day in history 160 years ago, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his second inaugural address, considered along with his Gettysburg Address and the Emancipation Proclamation the hallmarks of his presidency. In just 700 words, Lincoln sought to frame the civil war as a responsibility borne by North and South together, address some of the greatest dilemmas of his day with Biblical allusions, and encourage his countrymen to "bind up the nation's wounds" and "achieve a lasting peace." Would that all of us could be so thoughtful, so compassionate, so magnanimous.
