Who is your biggest competitor? ?? Many SMEs believe it’s the shop next door or the brand selling the same product—but competition is more complex than that. ?? Understanding competition means looking beyond the obvious. ? A direct competitor is another business selling the same thing (e.g., Jumia Group vs. Kilimall - Affordable Online Shopping). ? Indirect competitors solve the same problem differently (e.g., taxis vs. Uber). ?Substitute competitors offer an alternative (e.g., coffee vs. energy drinks). ? New entrants bring fresh challenges (e.g., international e-commerce platforms entering African markets). ?? Why does this matter? Because business is more than price wars—branding, customer experience, and innovation are key to winning in the market. ?? How to analyze your competition: - Research their pricing & offers - Study their branding & social media - Check customer reviews - Track market trends & innovations ?? How to stand out? - Build a strong brand & tell your unique story . - Offer top-notch customer service - Use tech & automation to scale - Focus on a powerful Unique Selling Proposition (USP) ?? Would you ever collaborate with a competitor? Why or why not? Let’s discuss! ?#BusinessGrowth #EntrepreneurshipAfrica #CompetitiveEdge #EntrepreneurMindset #BusinessSuccessTips #SMEGrowth #BuildYourBrand #ScalingYourBusiness #StandOutInBusiness #B2BAfrica #AfricanStartups #ScalingThroughPartnerships #foroyupage

?? How African SMEs Can Cut Costs Without Killing Growth ? Running a business is challenging; growing expenses, unstable markets, and shifting consumer demands can quickly deplete your resources. The actual problem, though, is how to reduce expenses without restricting the expansion of your company . Many SMEs make the mistake of cutting spending in crucial areas like marketing, customer service, or product quality, only to realize later that these cuts cost them more in lost sales, trust, and brand reputation. Rather than eliminating, smart cost-cutting focuses on optimising. African businesses are already doing this: ? Jumia Group Africa’s leading e-commerce platform, adopted automation in logistics to reduce delivery costs while improving efficiency. ? Wasoko this B2B e-commerce startup helping retailers access fast-moving consumer goods, switched to Just-In-Time (JIT) inventory management to reduce storage costs and excess stock burden. ? ShopRite supermarket chain keeps prices low and increases profit margins by negotiating bulk-purchasing discounts with suppliers, allowing them to pass savings onto customers while maintaining growth. ? Safaricom Business the telecom giant, outsourced customer service operations to reduce HR costs and improve efficiency. They also use AI-powered chatbots for customer support, reducing operational expenses. ?? The key? Cut the right costs, not the wrong ones! A strategic cost reduction approach can increase profitability, efficiency, and long-term sustainability for African businesses. ?? What’s the biggest cost-cutting strategy that worked for your business? The launch of Business Week Afrika in Lagos held at The Nest Innovation Technology Park Ltd was not an event to just sit, wile away time while waiting for refreshments and having the urge to leave almost immediately. That wasn’t it! Apart from the opportunity to have moderated the panel session which consisted of long-term thriving entrepreneurs, I resonated so much with every of the teachings from the speakers(panelists), and engaged my community management skills in connecting with the amazing people in the room as much as I could. I learnt a whole lot, and I’m glad I’m expanding my network and mindset most importantly.?? Some of the key lessons for me were: ?Don’t show problems, even if you have. Bring a solution- oriented idea. ?Be intentional about expanding your social capital- which is the value of relationships and connections with people. ?Keep documenting your process and experiences. Thank you Salma Ibra for founding and driving this initiative for entrepreneurs in Africa. Cheers to enlightening events like this.??? P.S: Business Week Afrika is hosting a Masterclass on Vision Board Creation for entrepreneurs. In this comprehensive masterclass, you'll gain: ?Actionable insights to structure your objectives. ?Practical tools to identify new opportunities. ?Expert guidance to craft a robust business roadmap for 2025. Bolt designed an accelerator program for it’s drivers , bodaboda riders and their spouses or children . This program was aimed to bring their business ideas to life with €2000 seed funding, access to mentorship and a learning journey with a curriculum . Our founder Salma Ibra was among the judges listening in on the business ideas during the pitching session and made a speech at the award ceremony . This project was particularly special to us as it aligns with our mission which is “ Empowering African Entrepreneurs “ . Huge thank you to organizations like Bolt for coming up with programs that support entrepreneurs with access to not only funding but also knowledge to navigate the entrepreneurship journey . #boltaccelaratorprogrammekenya Linda Ndungu Weyinmi Aghadiuno ASSEK
