It was a full and productive week of client work in TX with 4 back to back session days. That said, I was honored to be invited and super glad to get back yesterday to help train with ? Julio Melara for Baton Rouge Business Report‘s Leadership Academy. This program is limited to 36 participants twice per year and meticulously designed for some of the best and brightest emerging leaders in our community. It was so much fun to chop it up with Julio, share about what we’ve learned coaching and guiding over 100 companies, and then be asked some very powerful and insightful questions from these leaders. (This cohort is 65% female which was super cool to see as Dad of 3 young women) I always leave these type of events better than I arrived and inspired by the engagement and intention of the group. “The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark."?Michelangelo The Power of High Expectations When I first started in sales one of my mentors told me, “high expectations produce high results, Medium expectations produce low results and low expectations produce zero results” I never forgot that lesson. It was years later that I would learn it is part of the Pygmalion effect. The Pygmalion Effect, also known as the Rosenthal Effect, is a psychological phenomenon where higher expectations lead to an increase in performance. In the context of teams, this means that when leaders expect their team members to perform well, the team is more likely to meet those expectations. The belief and confidence that leaders demonstrate towards their team members can significantly enhance motivation, performance, and overall success. In a nutshell, the Pygmalion Effect states that when we set high expectations for people, we make it more likely they’ll meet or exceed them. Here are three ways you can utilize Pygmalion Effect to achieve your team goals: ? Set Clear and High Expectations: Communicate your belief in your team's abilities and set high yet achievable goals. When team members know that their leader has confidence in their skills and potential, they are more likely to strive to meet those expectations. For example, during a project kickoff, articulate the ambitious targets and express your faith in the team's capability to achieve them. Provide Positive Reinforcement and Feedback: Regularly recognize and celebrate achievements, no matter how small. Constructive feedback should focus on what team members are doing well and how they can leverage their strengths.
