Why is subsidy reform crucial to helping build a #NaturePositive economy? ?? Environmentally harmful subsidies (EHS) unintentionally contribute to air and water pollution, climate change, #BiodiversityLoss and land degradation, ultimately driving the destruction of #Ecosystems and #SpeciesExtinction. As of 2024, research by Doug Koplow and Ronald Steenblik has found that the world is spending at least $2.6 trillion a year on harmful subsidies, a significant increase since 2022. We’ve produced an addendum, reflecting on: ?? Target 18 of the Global Biodiveristy Framework, committing all signatory governments to identify, then eliminate, phase out, or reform incentives and subsidies harmful to biodiversity by at least $500 billion per year by 2030. ?? New guidance that we’ve published outlining the steps governments should take to reform harmful subsidies. ?? The growing call from the private sector in favor of EHS reform, where there’s a significant opportunity to incentivize businesses to restore nature, tackle the climate crisis and prioritize initiatives that enable communities to thrive. ?? The increase in EHS globally, including the first-event quantification of subsidies to the mining and plastics sectors, estimated at $40 billion and $30 billion, respectively. ?? ?? The water utilities and services sector is critical to securing the availability and sustainability of water and sanitation for all. However, the sector’s impacts and dependencies on nature in providing this public service are increasing, driven by growing demand and accelerating changes in our climate. Our sector guidance, produced with support from Accenture UK & Ireland, outlines how water utilities and services companies can transform and innovate their business practices and value chains to halt and reverse nature loss. Here are the top priorities: 1. Avoid sourcing freshwater in water-stressed and areas important to biodiversity; and reduce unsustainable freshwater use 2. Avoid and reduce water pollution 3. Avoid and reduce greenhouse gas emissions 4. Restore and regenerate habitats and ecosystems 5. Transform the sector through circularity, partnerships and policy ?? At Business for Nature, we've always believed in the power of collaboration to protect and restore our planet. That’s why we’re excited to see the launch of Nature Is Nonpartisan in the USA today, a movement dedicated to ‘working across political differences to deliver a healthier environment for the next generation.‘ Every business, no matter the size or sector, depends on services provided by nature like clean air, water and land. Businesses need policy certainty and predictability to accelerate action. In today’s polarized world, nature is a precious opportunity to unify efforts and drive meaningful change. We cannot achieve a #NaturePositive economy unless everyone is part of the solution. Now more than ever, we must work together to push for common-sense solutions and ensure nature remains above politics. ?? ???? Today marks #GlobalRecyclingDay! It’s a great reminder that recycling plays a key role in halting and reversing #NatureLoss by 2030. Right now, we’re using up natural resources and producing waste 1.75 times faster than the Earth can handle sustainably. The good news? The waste management industry plays a key role in changing this—through recycling and other circular economy solutions, we can cut down on resource consumption and reduce waste. Guidance we developed with Accenture UK & Ireland, as part of a broader collaboration with WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development and World Economic Forum, outlines the key actions the waste management sector should take to contribute to a #NaturePositive future.
