Bringing together +260 businesses committed to supporting the development of a UN treaty to end plastic pollution.
关于我们
The development of a legally binding UN treaty is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to tackle the plastic pollution crisis in a globally coordinated way. We must act urgently on a global, coordinated scale to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy for plastics, or the plastic pollution crisis will only get worse. The Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty brings together +260 businesses committed to supporting the development of an ambitious, effective and legally binding UN treaty to end plastic pollution. The coalition is convened by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and WWF, in collaboration with aligned businesses and supported by strategic NGO partners. The coalition will develop ambitious policy recommendations, engage with treaty negotiators, and build confidence in the business community on the benefits and necessity of an effective treaty that sets common goals, rules, and obligations to be implemented in national jurisdictions.

‘’It’s not just companies that can benefit. It’s governments too. From increased jobs and investments along the supply chain, to reduced spending on public waste management. No EPR schemes are exactly alike. To make them as effective as possible, we need one global definition.’’ - Gloria Gabellini, Director of Environmental Policy, PepsiCo The transitions within business to meet the global rules we are calling for are already well underway. All businesses have a role to play in helping to manage the waste they produce. But they cannot do it alone. As governments come together at #INC5 from Monday onwards to negotiate a global #PlasticsTreaty , a critical element must be considered: Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Introducing targets and systems for collection, reuse and recycling at the national level – based on common definitions and key principles – will level the playing field in tackling #plasticpollution. Listen to Gloria Gabellini, Director of Environmental Policy at PepsiCo, explain how Extended Producer Responsibility has impacted their operations and ambitions for a circular economy for plastics. in episode 3 of our #BusinessNeedsGlobalRules Today series: https://lnkd.in/eUFtbdwJ Watch the full series: https://lnkd.in/enNVUZ-V

As we head into #INC5, I'm incredibly proud to stand with a growing business and financial community pushing for an ambitious #plasticstreaty that addresses the full lifecycle of plastics, and unites private and public resources to tackle plastic pollution with the urgency it demands. Earlier this month, I joined the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Ellen MacArthur Foundation, His Majesty King Charles III, and members of Business For A Plastics Treaty Coalition to emphasize the need to keep the ambition high and obligations meaningful. The joint statement we issued reflects our shared commitment to progress. You can read it here: https://lnkd.in/g7pzaSuJ Addressing a challenge as complex as plastic pollution requires collaboration and persistence. It’s encouraging to see a global community of changemakers working toward the same goals. As I prepare to head to Busan, I’m ready to show up in every way I can to support the negotiations. My hope is that UN Member States will agree to take that critical first step. Starting somewhere matters because progress builds on progress. But that first step must be the foundation for more. We need to keep working together to strengthen obligations and raise ambitions over time to tackle the plastic pollution crisis at the scale it demands. Stay tuned. I’ll share my reflections and key takeaways after the negotiations.

I'll be heading to the #PlasticsTreaty INC-5 talks shortly in Busan on behalf of Unilever and Business For A Plastics Treaty. Business is clear - At INC-5 we need concrete outcomes towards a treaty based on global rules. Without this, the fragmented regulatory environment we are facing will continue to grow, causing more cost and complexity. Business needs global rules! As a member of Business For A Plastics Treaty, PepsiCo supports the creation of a strong global treaty to end plastic pollution. With #INC5 in Busan quickly approaching, governments have an opportunity to help establish a circular economy for plastic packaging by producing a binding treaty that includes clear definitions and globally harmonized policies on how plastics are designed, used and managed after use. ? In the latest #BusinessNeedsGlobalRules video series, Gloria Gabellini, our Director for EU Environmental Policy, explores how well-designed Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes contribute to better waste management, sharing an inspiring example from Fost Plus in Belgium that demonstrates the impact of effective collaboration between businesses and policies.

‘Global rules also bring a level of industry confidence, and that helps to spark further innovation, further investment. That’s absolutely vital for businesses to be able to scale solutions quickly, and tackle the plastic pollution problem.’ -Holly Nelson , Head of Packaging Operations, Unilever As we approach the last planned round of negotiations for a Global #PlasticsTreaty, we call on governments to factor in sector-specific approaches and global criteria for circular product design of plastic products, such as packaging. The final round of international negotiations (INC-5) for the UN Global Plastics Treaty will take place in Busan, Republic of Korea from 25 November to 1 December 2024. We are proud to be one of the signatories of the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) Private Financial Sector's Statement advocating for an ambitious UN Plastics Treaty which recognises the urgent need for collective action against plastic pollution – a critical challenge for our planet. The world is facing a triple crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. The rapid rise in plastic production and consumption, particularly single-use items, poses a severe threat not only to our ecosystems but also to human health and rights. There is a pressing need for a comprehensive treaty that not only addresses the full lifecycle of plastic but also fosters a circular economy. Click below to read the Financial Sector Statement. On Wednesday 11 December 12.00pm – 12.45pm, we will be hosting our next live lunchtime webinar ‘Tackling Plastic pollution’ with guest speaker John Duncan global initiative lead, No Plastics in Nature Initiative at WWF and co-lead of Business For A Plastics Treaty to discuss this topic further.
