Busy 3rd day in Busan.?First, there was a U.S. Industry Stakeholder Briefing where the US government negotiators discussed the US position.?BPI spoke up and asked for clarification and support for compostables as a viable alternative for food-contact packaging. Next was a strategy session with the @busine Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty, where we got swag and handouts to help show support from the business community for achieving a treaty this week. After that we had a smaller planning meeting to finalize details on an official side event on bioplastics to be held on Thursday that I’ve been developing for months. It’s coming together nicely (stay tuned for the announcement soon!). Then there were opening remarks from the INC-5 Chair and UNEP with questions and comments from observers.?European Bioplastics asked about the role of compostables as an alternative. Finally, a wonderful WWF event “Delivering A Treaty that Nature Needs: Powered by Solutions and Shared Ambition.” #BusinessNeedsGlobalRules

Did you know that currently, an estimated 9 million to 14 million tons of plastic waste ends up in our oceans each year? Plastic is an essential part of our everyday lives. Every year, the world produces over 462 million tons of plastic. While plastic can be a useful material, 90% of it pollutes our Planet ?? Tomorrow, world leaders will come together in Busan, Republic of Korea, for the fifth and final?negotiations for a global treaty to end plastic pollution (INC-5). In March 2022, Member states of the United Nations agreed to develop a legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution, to be finalised by the end of 2024. UN Environment Programme is time to deliver on that promise, the majority of stakeholders support this goal and The world is watching.? Businesses worldwide have aligned to call on governments to create an ambitious, effective, and legally binding Treaty that addresses the environmental and social impacts throughout the full life cycle of plastics including: 1. Core provisions to restrict or phase out problematic plastic products as well as chemicals of concern, and reduction of virgin plastic; 2. Harmonized guidance on product design; and 3. EFFECTIVE extended producer responsibility (EPR) - through a common global approach. Today marks the start of the 5th - and final - round of negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty. I am here in Busan, Korea - and trying to support where I can, so we can indeed reach a strong agreement this week. “It’s crucial that we agree on an effective treaty in Busan,” says Anne Beathe Kristiansen Tvinnereim, Norway’s minister of international development. “We can’t wait another 10 years from now to deliver results.” Plastic pollution is expected to double in 20 years unless the world takes action, she adds.” The opening speech from UN Environment Programme stressed urgency for human health, our environment and also for business. #businessneedsglobalrules Under the strong leadership of Luis Vayas Valdivieso I remain hopeful of a positive outcome, where we can advance on the basis of his non-paper. The stakes for a legally binding treaty have never been higher. As Korea said this morning: “We need to end plastic pollution, before plastic pollution ends us”. ?? Towards a Strong Global Plastics Treaty at INC-5. Mondelēz International supports a legally binding treaty that tackles the entire lifecycle of plastic products, underpinned by harmonised regulation. Given the agreement among all governments that the plastic pollution challenge is a matter of urgency, we strongly encourage all UN Member States to work towards concrete outcomes at INC-5 in Busan, Republic of Korea, starting today: 1?? Restrict Problematic Plastics: Phase out avoidable plastics and harmful chemicals with global criteria and clear guidance. 2?? Boost Collection, Reuse, and Recycling: Mandate national targets with tools like EPR and Deposit Return Systems. 3?? Support a Just Transition: Align funding with treaty goals to ensure fair opportunities for workers, waste pickers, and communities. 4?? Target Key Sectors: Develop work programmes for areas like packaging and fishing gear. 5?? Ensure Accountability: Implement robust systems for reporting, monitoring, and adapting policies. How can plastic pollution be tackled in a globally coordinated way? ?? The #GlobalPlasticsTreaty highlights the need to adopt and ratify an ambitious United Nations treaty to end plastic pollution. Setting legally binding rules to end plastics pollution is one of the key asks in Business for Nature's policy recommendations for effective implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework. This week, Business For A Plastics Treaty is emphasizing the #INC5 in Busan as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to address plastic pollution at a global level with a treaty that is fit for purpose. In order to deliver an ambitious treaty in line with the UNEA resolution 5/14, we need an initial agreement at INC5 for the Global Plastics Treaty to include the following critical elements, at a minimum: ?? Strong provisions to restrict or phase out problematic and avoidable plastic products as well as chemicals of concern, and to improve product design. ?? An obligation to introduce or advance targets and systems for collection, reuse and recycling at the national level. ?? A comprehensive package to support the implementation of the treaty. ?? A mandate to develop sector or product specific approaches to inform future decisions at #COP. ?? A sound mechanism for reporting, monitoring progress and evaluating the treaty's effectiveness on a regular basis.
