We love our Buffalo State faculty and staff and are excited to highlight their accomplishments! Lorena D. Mathien, chair and associate professor in the Business Department, has published a book titled Why NOT Me? How to Pick Yourself Up by Your Bra Straps and Keep Living after Breast Cancer Diagnosis. Mathien’s mother and sister were both diagnosed with breast cancer in their 40s and, four months after her 40th birthday, a routine scan revealed Mathien herself had cancer. Nine years later, as a two-time survivor, Mathien shares her story. In addition to Mathien’s publication, there have been many other recent outstanding achievements by Buffalo State faculty members. One of the most discouraging points in a job seeker's journey is when they are not offered a position after multiple interviews. It is especially frustrating when they are not given a clear reason why. All they can do is honestly reflect on the experience and identify any growth opportunities. This article by Alyssa Towns offers great insight into what prevents candidates from moving forward in the interview process. I encourage you to read the entire article, but here are my quick thoughts on the top reasons she gives for candidates not being asked back for another interview. 1. Obvious signs of distraction – your mind is elsewhere and so is your interest. 2. Not preparing enough (or at all) – a lack of readiness communicates a lack of professionalism and initiative. 3. Misaligned salary expectations – come prepared with a desired salary range. 4. Speaking poorly about a former employer – keep your comments positive and focused on what you are looking for. 5. Poor time management – breathe, slow down, and answer each question with as few words as possible while also communicating what you need. Use the STAR (Situation-Task-Action-Result) method to stay on track. 6. Availability conflicts – promptly return the hiring manager’s calls and be mindful that this might be the only shot you have at being considered for the job, so do whatever you can to be available. 7. Company culture mismatch concerns – within the first few minutes of an interview, the hiring manager will decide whether they like you. Liking you is the first step in fitting into their culture. 8. Competition with other candidates – We can only hope that the hiring manager gives you feedback. If you aren’t privy to this information, stay focused on continuous learning to align your skills and experience with what is in demand. Take an honest look at your interview skills. At Bengala 2024, Buffalo Poet Laureate Aitina Fareed-Cooke ’12, ’16, left us all inspired with her powerful spoken word piece, A Letter to My Younger Self. Now, in a special collaboration with her company, Get Fokus’d Productions, and Buffalo State University, Aitina has created an abridged version that keeps the same tone and energy while sparking our imaginations to realize our dreams.
