    Looking back, nothing has slowed me down more than "Hard Work." Because hard work is what I believe in most. Hard work = Productivity This served me well in construction; you worked hard and stood more walls, set windows, and built a house. Hard work is about producing and seeing the results; it is rewarding. This is good...and bad. ???I can't relax ???Hobbies are pointless ???Parties are not fun These activities don't produce, so I get anxious. Yet, they do produce in ways I am not comfortable with. Relaxing is recovery; we need to rest Hobbies build new skills and teach patience. Parties build relationships and networking skills. It is all good...so they say. I get it, but it is hard. This is why the skills that got you here will not get you where you want to go. Hard work, as I perceived it, served me well as a carpenter. But the same hard work does not translate for me as a business owner. It feels like I am goofing off. ???Reading spreadsheets ???Attending network events ???Streamlining an accounting process. These don't feel like work; work is physically demanding and makes you sweat, Yet, being a business owner requires new skills, and the hardest for me was recognizing that these tasks were my responsibility, they were productive, and they were work. It's just not the way I perceived it in the past. Until I wrapped my head around this, my business was stuck...in the past. Business Blueprint Inc.

    As your construction business grows your leadership skills must grow with it. You know how to lead a team, and as a builder, assembling and leading a team to project completion is the name of the game. But you had a set of plans and an objective to shoot for. Now, your team is looking to you for Leadership. Where are you taking us, why are we going there, and most importantly, what is in it for me? To lead, you need to have an objective and a destination. Think of leading troops in the military. We are going to take that hill. Ok, we all have a goal, but why will I potentially die for that hill? If they are clear, then you have buy-in and teamwork. 2025 is quickly approaching, and now is the time to consider your goals: 1. In five years, the objective is to ___________ 2. To achieve that we need to ____________ next year and ________the following. 3. We are doing this because _______________________ and as a result YOU will___________. Set your goals, have a reason, and then make it personal for them. They will execute if they are clear on the plan and can see how they will win. Help them make your goal theirs. This is leadership; as the business grows, you will lead your team, then your managers so they can lead the team, and someday you may lead the C-suite. However, they will all need direction and objectives and a clear understanding of how they will?win. Lay out that plan and help them execute it, giving them the tools they need to succeed.     Why I believe great builders make for terrible General contractors They love to build And building has very little to do with being a GC. Here are 20 things you never had to do while building houses 1. Set up workman's comp 2. Write subcontracts 3. Pay invoices 4. Marketing 5. Attend networking events 6. Go on sales calls 7. Develop a sales strategy 8. Manage a CRM 9. Write prime contracts 10. Hire office staff 11. Buy liability insurance 12. Develop a leave policy 13. Track job cost & project profitability 14. Read P&L statements and balance sheets 15. Set up and run payroll 16. Set up a benefits package 17. Develop job descriptions and a performance plan 18. Estimating 19. Reconcile account statements 20. Select and implement Contech These are things off the top of my head; there are plenty more - you wear all of the hats. And every single one is work most builders hate to do Yet, THIS is now your job. Setting all of this up and more is working on the business. Builders tell me, "I tried to run my own business, but it did not work out." It did not work out because no one was running the business. The owner was managing the work they loved "building." Great chefs can't manage a restaurant - the same issue applies. This is why the book E-Myth resonates with so many folks. Running your own show is a lot of work and requires earning a ton of stuff you have never done. THIS is why 95% fail - they love to build and are good at it. But you changed careers.     It does not get easier...you get stronger But you have to put in the reps One day at the gym will not cut it 1. Practice your sales pitch 2. Set 20% of your time aside to work on the business 3.     Since every idea I have is "the best idea ever" in my mind, yet often not in practice, I could use your help.
