The First Lady’s Book Club welcomed Foundation board member and author, Dr. Ruth Simmons to discuss “Up Home: One Girl’s Journey" at The Junior League of Houston, Inc. earlier this week. Moderated by Houston Chronicle Columnist Joy Sewing, Dr. Simmons shared inspiring insights from her childhood, emphasizing the importance of education and the profound influence her teachers had on her pursuit of higher education. As the first African American president of an Ivy League institution, Dr. Simmons has continued to champion the same values, inspiring her students to strive for excellence and higher learning. Through our collaboration, Cougar Tutors have provided more than 10,000 hours of tutoring annually and have contributed to significant milestones, such as the transformation of Blackshear Elementary from an F-rated school to an A-rated school. However, our impact goes beyond numbers and ratings – it’s about changing the lives of our students.
