Midwest-based greenhouse vegetable grower focused on quality, freshness and flavor

关于我们

Bushel Boy Farms was founded in Owatonna, Minn. in 1990 with a simple desire to grow fresh, local, and vine-ripened tomatoes year-round, even in the depth of a Minnesota winter. Known for their indoor farming leadership and red, ripe colored and fresh garden-flavored tomatoes, Bushel Boy has been supplying the upper Midwest with tomatoes year-round—long before locally grown was an important consumer-buying consideration. Bushel Boy’s expert agriculture team has created the perfect growing environment in its Owatonna and Mason City, Iowa facilities, combining the latest in greenhouse design and technology with the hands-on TLC it takes to produce high-quality, premium produce. Bushel Boy crops are always vine-ripened, carefully packed and rapidly shipped for maximum freshness and flavor. Bushel Boy Farms is a leader in Minnesota’s food production space and a passionate innovator in the region’s indoor farming category. With the most recent launch of its two cucumber varieties and ongoing success with tomatoes and strawberries, Bushel Boy continues to explore new consumer-driven produce varieties that help retailers create supply chain efficiencies and address market demand. The company’s unique manufacturing practice (indoor farming) continues to evolve with new technologies and enables their tomato, strawberry, and cucumber plants to grow in all weather conditions, providing upper Midwesterners with local, fresh produce to enjoy any time of year.

Sustainability runs through everything we do. From saving hundreds of thousands of gallons of water annually, to utilizing UV filtration and natural pollinators like bumblebees, we're proud to make a positive (and delicious) impact on our planet. ??

Did you know music can help plants grow? ?? Studies have shown that sound waves, particularly certain frequencies, can stimulate plant growth by causing small vibrations that promote nutrient absorption and cellular function. At Bushel Boy, we take this science to heart by playing music in our greenhouses to help our produce thrive. ???? But the benefits of music don’t stop with the plants—it also helps create a fun and uplifting environment for our growers! At our greenhouses, the tunes don’t just inspire growth; they bring our team together. Whether it’s dancing after a long day of hard work or serenading the produce, our growers’ passion and positivity make all the difference. Special thanks to Emily Andes, our Research and Innovation Manager at Greenhouse 9, for capturing this moment. When our team loves what they do, it shows—in every plant we grow. ??

Did you know bumblebees are the unsung heroes behind our greenhouse-grown tomatoes? At Bushel Boy, we use bumblebees to naturally and efficiently pollinate our tomato plants. These busy pollinators vibrate the flowers through a process called buzz pollination, transferring enough pollen in a single visit to ensure the development of ripe, flavorful tomatoes. ???? Here’s why bumblebees are perfect for our greenhouse setting: ?? They are incredibly efficient pollinators, working much faster than manual methods. ?? Their colony lifestyle ensures continuous foraging and pollination. ?? They thrive in controlled environments like greenhouses, adapting well to temperature and humidity conditions. In just 50-60 days after pollination, our vibrant tomato flowers transform into the juicy, delicious tomatoes you find in stores. This partnership between nature and innovation ensures fresh, local produce year-round. We’re proud to grow food sustainably and support pollinator health. A big thank-you to our bumblebee partners for their important work!

It’s our responsibility to reduce waste as a sustainable food company, which is why we started composting materials beginning in 2023. Our first priority is to support our communities through donations to regional food banks, including Second Harvest Heartland and Channel One Regional Food Bank. We donated more than 300 tons of produce in 2023. We also send our leaves and tomatoes waste to the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s (SMSC) Organic Recycling Facility to be processed as #compost. We’re proud to report that we composted more than 225 tons of material last year. We're currently researching additional ways to divert other materials away from landfills, including redesigning the support clips used in our growing process to be made from compostable materials, connecting with local farmers for more composting opportunities, increasing recycling rates and exploring technologies that will help manage more compostable materials at our growing locations. #ZeroWaste #SustainableLiving
