It’s always great to see the Hotel Del renovation profiled in various publications. We were thrilled to see the recent write-up on the Victorian Guestroom and Courtyard renovation in the San Diego Union-Tribune.?The work completed by David Marshall /Heritage Architecture, and Wimberly Interiors is absolutely stunning.??https://lnkd.in/g7K6cbMN Burton Studio has been involved in the renovation of this iconic hotel since 2007.?When looking to update their site master plan for this iconic, 100-year-old beachfront hotel, the Hotel del Coronado chose Burton?Studio for the task. A complete master plan study of the site was initiated, including new hotel rooms, conference rooms, and meeting facilities. Parking and circulation requirements were reviewed, and they were recommended to be placed underground in three site garages. With the parking removed, the site plan blossomed, creating new outdoor event areas, gardens, swimming pools, and a new beachfront promenade. We consider the Victorian Courtyard renovation the capstone of our nearly?18-year involvement with the master planning, design, and construction of the Hotel del Coronado. Similar to many of the architectural renovations that have taken place over the years, the landscape throughout the property has been updated with the same attention to detail and thoughtful design. Burton Studio was also in the unique position to approach the design holistically — looking at the property as a cohesive campus. From Shore House to the Victorian, and across the pools and event spaces in between, we’ve designed and renovated nearly every area of the property.?This comprehensive approach also allowed us to focus on smaller, special moments — like recreating and reintroducing the Venus statue to the Victorian Courtyard, or designing the ever-popular fire pit patios at the Cabana rooms. In terms of planting design, we aimed to strike a balance between the lush, Victorian botanical gardens of the past and the beloved coastal California landscape. This blend complements the Victorian architecture while providing vibrant, colorful moments for guests to enjoy throughout the property. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the vision and investment of the hotel’s owners, Blackstone, and the dedication of an incredible team of architects, designers, historians, and construction professionals. We are proud to have played a role in preserving this legendary landmark for generations to come.

Burton Studio was founded in 1989 by principal William Burton. Distinguished by its collaborative skills, site planning and timeless design, the Studio’s work is modern in tone while based on classic proportion and scale. The Studio considers the ritual of experiencing the built environment, with the goal of achieving a natural and pure relationship with a designed project and its surroundings. The methodology is simple. A custom exploration of the design opportunities with an organic execution of understated elegance. The Studio’s goal is to discover a relaxed stability in man’s inherent structured nature. Research is key to the process. Applying classically trained approaches and techniques, the communal studio workroom is a place for instruction, experimentation and collaboration. Within this environment the Studio explores the notions of purity, clarity, modernity and intimacy in every project. Inspiration originates from great works of design, literature and art, informing and motivating the designer’s way of thinking. The main question the Studio asks is a simple one - what are the significant ingredients of a formative design and how are they creatively synthesized and brought to realization? The process results in the exceptional qualities unique to each Burton Studio project.

Well, that was sensational. The preview of RH Newport Beach, The Gallery at Fashion Island was the event of the decade with awe-struck partygoers swirling through the four-story exhibit space, the largest RH showroom in the world. Necks craned toward the double staircase dramatically spiraling toward the ocean-view rooftop restaurant, RH Ocean Grill. Patrick Baldwin and Roger Wilcox recently returned from a visit to our Msheireb Downtown Doha project, and we are thrilled by the many images they brought back. They spent two days revisiting our work sessions, CGIs, and plans, and it was a joy to see that everything we designed was brought to life. The attention to detail and dedication put into this project is evident in every aspect. As a team, we are proud to have led the landscape architecture for the public realm across all phases of the project. This achievement is a testament to the collaborative efforts of our immediate team, LLS - Landscape, Lighting, and Signage, which included Square Peg Design, KGM Lighting, Water Concern Irrigation designers, and CMS for water feature design. Working alongside such a talented group of master planners, design architects, executive architects, and the delivery team was a privilege.
