We'd like to thank all of the communities, agencies, and other stakeholders who have been meeting with us and the Scioto County Emergency Management Agency to prepare a hazard mitigation plan for the county over the past few months. The work continues as we assess risks and identify appropriate mitigation strategies. #BPS #hazardmitigationplan #preparedness

Celebrating National Engineers Week: Meet Dan Schmuhl, PE Behind every smooth commute and efficient traffic flow stands a dedicated transportation engineer. These professionals tackle complex challenges like reducing congestion, improving safety, and preparing our infrastructure for the future of transportation. Their impact extends far beyond the morning commute – it's about building more livable, connected communities. In honor of #NationalEngineersWeek, we want to recognize Dan, a Senior Transportation Engineer with #BPS. Dan has 11 years of experience working in the private sector focusing on highway engineering and roadway design. For him, engineering provides a natural avenue to pursue a career and life goal of leaving a positive mark on society, while also playing to his personal interests in science, math, and how things work. Throughout his career, Dan has particularly enjoyed working on a Creative Campus project for the Columbus State campus that provided streetscaping, roadway improvements, active transportation facilities, and utility improvements. The project was a collaborative effort between planners and engineers which went hand-in-hand with major enhancements to the campus that positively impacted the community. BPS wants to thank Dan for the work he does to make transportation safe, equitable, and efficient while always bringing a fresh perspective to projects! #NationalEngineersWeek #TransportationEngineering #Transportation #Engineering #NatEngWeek #Infrastructure

Celebrating National Engineers Week: Meet Lee R. Meet Lee, a Senior Transportation Planner/Engineer at #BPS who has 7 years of experience in safety analysis and recommendations, active transportation planning, roadway conceptual design, and the transportation elements of environmental review. Lee considers himself a “Plan-gineer,” someone who works at the intersection of planning and engineering. His work demonstrates how local knowledge and technical expertise can be fused to create better communities. One memorable project Lee has worked on was The Heights Regional Active Transportation Plan. He brought a unique perspective to improving Cleveland Heights, University Heights, and South Euclid – the very neighborhoods that shaped his early years. What made Lee's approach special was his deep connection to the area: from childhood memories in University Heights to post-college life in Cleveland Heights, this personal insight, combined with professional expertise, adds an invaluable layer to his engineering work. Lee's passion for engineering springs from its power to unveil the hidden stories of our built environment. Whether it's understanding the purpose behind a street's design or spotting those small-but-crucial infrastructure elements that make our cities work, he sees engineering as a way to decode the world around us. This National Engineers Week, we celebrate professionals like Lee who combine technical excellence with genuine community connection. It's a reminder that the best engineering solutions come from both the head and the heart. #NationalEngineersWeek #Engineering #TransportationPlanning #CommunityDevelopment #ActiveTransportation #LocalImpact

Celebrating National Engineers Week: Meet Caitlyn Ridge, P.E. From quiet residential streets to bustling downtown corridors, engineers are silent guardians of community well-being. They're the ones carefully crafting spaces that bring neighbors together while keeping everyone safe. Meet Caitlyn, BPS’ Transportation Manager with 14 years of experience, whose work exemplifies how engineering transforms communities. Early in her career, Caitlyn took the lead on bringing the Bearskin Creek Greenway in Monroe, NC to life, a project that now connects multiple parks and the local farmer's market. What began as a technical challenge became a catalyst for her deeper engagement with transportation planning. Today, seeing the completed Bearskin Creek Greenway and its impact on the community reflects exactly why Caitlyn chose this field – combining her love for math, art, and problem-solving to create spaces that connect people. Caitlyn's journey to engineering is as inspiring as her work. Growing up with educator parents who taught technology, she spent summers at teacher workshops exploring engineering concepts. From solving isometric drawing puzzles on family road trips to learning drafting through hands-on projects with her parents, these early experiences shaped her path in engineering. To Caitlyn and all engineers: your work creates ripples that extend beyond the initial design. You're not just building infrastructure – you're building the framework for community connection and accessibility. #NationalEngineersWeek #Engineering #WomenInEngineering #Infrastructure #ActiveTransportation #BPS

#BPS, Design Workshop, and Columbus Recreation and Parks Department had the great privilege of sitting down with Columbus residents who are actively caring for their neighborhood parks in a focus group session on park stewardship for Playbook Columbus (www.playbookcolumbus.com). We learned about their roles, responsibilities, how they fundraise and recruit volunteers, the big issues, and their big ideas for the future of parks and recreation in Columbus. (More focus groups to come!) #engagement #parks

Yesterday, Caitlyn Ridge, P.E. helped to present the final results from the City of Worthington Bicycle Boulevard Pilot project to City Council. As part of testing bicycle boulevard implementation, Burton Planning Services collected vehicle speed and volume data on two pilot corridors. We also supported multiple public meetings, a public survey with nearly 350 responses, and other public outreach efforts. The presentation helped to distill the mixed reactions to the pilot and suggest next steps for bicycle boulevard implementation in Worthington. "I'm going to thank Burton Planning, they have been incredible in this experience." - Rebecca Green, Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Board President #BPS #activetransportation #pilotproject
