关于我们

Situated on a magnificent 167-acre site overlooking the city, we encourage visitors to explore the natural beauty of Round Top Mountain, learn about its ecology, revisit the lives of farmers from the 1800s, and tour the Burritt Mansion. For over 60 years Burritt has been an attraction that everyone can enjoy. The site is home to Dr. William Henry Burritt’s unique 1938 mansion. Learn the story of Dr. Burritt and his three wives, his penchant for goat’s milk, and how his vocation of homeopathic medicine led him to build one of the city’s most unique and eccentric homes. The Historic Park consists of 6 authentic 19th century homes typical of life in the Cumberland Plateau, along with a blacksmith shop and assorted outbuildings. Interpreters in authentic period dress are on hand to answer questions, give tours, and demonstrate life as it was on a farm during the 1800s. At the heart of the Historic Park is The McCurdy Barnyard, home to a variety of authentic farm animals that educate young and old about the animals’ purpose on a farm. The Nature Trails at Burritt are perfect for hiking to enjoy the wide variety of wildflowers in spring or the colorful mountain foliage in fall. Burritt’s trails circle around Round Top Mountain and connect to the LandTrust of Madison County and Monte Sano State Park. Geocachers come from around the world to explore the mountain and find our cache.

  • Join us in celebrating our volunteer of the month, Stephen Kirsch! Stephen’s journey with Burritt began thanks to his lovely bride Alice, but it was blacksmithing that truly ignited his passion. Encouraged by Ronold Thomas, he took a few folk school classes and was instantly hooked. His love for teaching and engaging with people made volunteering a natural fit, and since then, he has become an essential part of Burritt, contributing countless hours to blacksmithing, education, special events, and more. For Stephen, the most rewarding part of volunteering is sharing how amazing our ancestors were with visitors. He enjoys helping people realize that artistry, creativity, and innovation are not modern concepts but have been woven into history for centuries. Plus, he takes great pride in delivering some top-notch dad jokes along the way! https://lnkd.in/g5Rq3zZC

  • We are delighted to recognize Theresa Durboraw as our February Volunteer of the Month! Since becoming a volunteer at Burritt in 2021, Theresa has been an essential part of our Education Team, serving as a Historic Park interpreter and teaching lessons during school field trips. She also joined the Burritt Advisory Council, and eventually, was selected to serve as a Burritt Board Member. For Theresa, the most rewarding part of volunteering is seeing the excitement on students’ faces as they connect with the past—whether it’s understanding the challenges of a child’s life in history or learning hands-on skills like milking Boxy the faux Cow. These moments of discovery and engagement make history come alive for visitors of all ages. When asked what makes Burritt on the Mountain so special, Theresa highlights its diverse offerings—from lessons in history, exploring the hiking trails, learning a new craft/skill through the Burritt Folk School, visiting the barnyard, to relaxing evenings with music and friends; Burritt offers something for everyone to enjoy. The array of programs available truly make Burritt on the Mountain the jewel in the heart of Huntsville. We are incredibly grateful for Theresa’s dedication and enthusiasm. Her contributions help bring Burritt’s mission to life, inspiring curiosity and learning in all who visit. Congratulations Theresa! https://lnkd.in/g5Rq3zZC

  • Burritt on the Mountain thrives because of our dedicated volunteers! In the past year alone, 863 volunteers gave an incredible 18,640+ hours of their time to support our programs and events. We recently had the honor of recognizing these amazing individuals at our Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, where Mayor Battle presented the Mayoral Service Awards to outstanding volunteers. From assisting with Cocktails at The View to keeping our daily operations running smoothly, their impact is felt in every part of Burritt. To all who give their time to Burritt and other nonprofits—thank you! Your service makes a lasting difference. ??
