Today, we took a moment to pause and celebrate our company's history. February is an important month for many reasons, particularly February 24th. February 24th is the birthday of Lilla Burris, the first female born in four generations. Lilla had shared ownership in the Burris Company along with her brothers and was always present at company gatherings and community events. She is also the mother of one of our current Team Members and one of our Board Members. February 24th is also the day John W. Burris started the John W. Burris Trucking Company in 1939 after retiring from Victor Lynn. The company's sole purpose was to transport food products for Acme and A&P Stores from Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia. On February 19, 1979, our Harrington, Delaware warehouse was destroyed by a fire during a blizzard. Many say the Burris "Make it Happen" core value was born that day. Despite the total loss of inventory and use of our warehouse, we were up and running again in just 13 weeks.
