For leadership roles in large, complex organization, our research identifies four very specific patterns of thought that drive superior performance: Returning Authority; Mutuality; Paradox & Complexity; and Work Focus. Leveraging Differences and Respect for Differences are certainly part of embracing Paradox & Complexity. And how can you be emotionally intelligent and not have respect for differences? There's what some would like ideologically... and then there's the science.
The Center for Creative Leadership just announced that they are removing two competencies from their Benchmark leadership and management assessment products: Leveraging Differences and Respect for Differences. They explained that this decision was made in response to concerns from federal employees about DEI. In my mind, CCL's decision is a terrible idea. It leads to one of two conclusions, neither of which is good: 1. CCL knows that the competencies are important, but is sacrificing its rigorous, high-quality research in the interest of political appeasement. 2. CCL is removing competencies that were never needed for effective management and leadership. If this is the case, it calls into question the validity of the assessments and CCL's work. The competencies in question are not radical. Most people work in places where there are many differences. Leveraging and respecting differences is not about any political agenda. Instead, they support that creation and leadership of effective, high-performing teams. I've been using CCL's assessments for 15+ years and I've always been an advocate for them and for CCL. I'm dissapointed that CCL is not practicing what it preaches. This is a moment when CCL should be standing up for its research and researchers. I've written to CCL CEO Martin Schneider. If you are similarly concerned by this action, I hope you will consider writing to him as well. #organizationdevelopment #assessment #leadership #leadershipassessment #ethics Keli Trejo Judy Vogel David R.
