Day 2 of the Northeast School Safety Summit was filled with impactful discussions and vital information! The day began with a session led by Meg Soultz and Savahanna Wagner DO, MS, MPH, who highlighted the importance of effective bleeding control curriculum in K-12 schools.
Next, Theresa Campbell from Safer Schools Together addressed today’s digital landscape, emphasizing that nearly 90% of threats are communicated online. Attendees walked away with knowledge on how to identify, assess, and respond to online threats.
We then heard from a panel featuring Todd McGhee, MS, PMP, Lt. Pamela Revels, Sgt. William Chapman, and Officer Chip Yeaton, joined by his comfort dog Potato, who absolutely stole the show! Together, they shared insights into collaborative efforts between education and law enforcement to foster safer environments for students
Michele Gay continued with her keynote, Especially Safe: An Inclusive Approach to Safety Preparedness in Educational Settings, emphasizing the importance of meeting the unique needs of ALL school community members. She was joined by Jeff Snyder and Evan Kirksey for a fireside chat, who offered valuable insights on supporting individuals with special needs in school safety.
To close the summit, Frank DeAngelis, retired principal of Columbine High School, delivered a powerful keynote on leadership lessons drawn from his time at Columbine and the journey of recovery that followed. He reminded us all of the importance of prioritizing the well-being of our students, families, and school staff.
