Thank you, Ross Waugh, for your continued contributions and for making the long journey to join us for the second time! Your insights and dedication to the industry are always greatly appreciated. It’s inspiring to see how your conversations, like the one with Heather Himmelberger, continue to shape meaningful discussions. Looking forward to seeing you again in 2025!
Ross Waugh really enjoyed his time at the 2nd Annual BAMI-I (Buried Asset Management Institute-International) Congress last week. The long travel from NZ to America is always well worth Ross' enjoyment of meeting colleagues, sharing insights and industry practice developments, and at being among the many wonderful people who work in this industry. Here are his takeaways as both a participant and a speaker: Heather Himmelberger and Ross Waugh were able to have a conversation for an hour based on the theme 'the infinite loop' that incorporated looking back to look forward and projecting what is ahead to inform decisions now.?? During the conversation they covered: — The total cost of assets over their lifecycle, and how that can impact on decision making. — The advantages of incremental investment in smoothing tariff's and maintaining resources and expertise. — Labour resource scarcity and resilience - there is a big growth in demand for engineers in the USA, projected to be an additional 13% per year until 2031, and a third of roles unfilled each year (which is a similar situation in both Australia and New Zealand.) — The issue of funding public health infrastructure in small, rural, remote and deprived communities with previous state and federal funding being free grants, meaning communities are reluctant to fund new infrastructure or required upgrades themselves. ??Well done to Tom Iseley, Wei Liao and BAMI-I (Buried Asset Management Institute-International) who put this conference together and continue to run it every year, you deserve all the applause for your hard work in providing incredible value and connection to our industry. Looking forward to what 2025 will bring for all of us!

Sharing a snapshot of the speaker line-up. All are encouraged to attend to learn more about protecting one our critical resources.... Water. Josh, thank you so much for your thoughtful post and for being such an important part of the panel! We’re thrilled to hear how much value you found in the discussions at the BAMI-I Congress. Your point about states requiring asset management plans to access funding is incredibly timely and important—it perfectly aligns with our commitment to outreach and education. That’s also why we host the important event, GBAMC, to further these crucial discussions and initiatives. Together, with voices like yours, we’re making strides toward stronger, more resilient utilities for communities everywhere. It was truly an honor to have you on board. Let’s keep the conversation going!
It was an honor to be a part of such an esteemed panel at the BAMI-I (Buried Asset Management Institute-International) Congress in Indianapolis this weekend. Amidst a room of engineers and asset management professionals it was interesting to hear that asset management challenges in the utility sector are universal and not dependent on the size of the utility. There's still such a disconnect between the wet utilities and asset management. The gap is starting to close, but only because of outreach and education from groups like BAMI-I and rural water associations. It also helps that states are beginning to require asset management plans in order to tap into funds! Thank you to my fellow panelists for your great insight and conversation!
