关于我们

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is the principal fact-finding agency for the Federal Government in the broad field of labor economics and statistics. The BLS is an independent national statistical agency that collects, processes, analyzes, and disseminates essential statistical data to the American public, the U.S. Congress, other Federal agencies, State and local governments, business, and labor. The BLS also serves as a statistical resource to the Department of Labor. BLS data must satisfy a number of criteria, including relevance to current social and economic issues, timeliness in reflecting today’s rapidly changing economic conditions, accuracy and consistently high statistical quality, and impartiality in both subject matter and presentation.

  • Sales versus margins: alternative measures of output and productivity for retail trade In this article, we introduce new margin-based measures of output—and, hence, productivity—for the retail trade sector, complementing existing sales-based measures and identifying the factors that affect differences between the two types of measures. We find that, from 2007 to 2022, sales productivity outpaced margin productivity in most retail industries examined. In addition, we take a closer look at three representative industries with different productivity trends, examining the role of prices in those trends. In electronics and appliance stores, sales productivity grew rapidly while margin productivity grew more slowly. In beer, wine, and liquor stores, the two measures trended similarly. In pharmacies and drug stores, margin productivity grew 3 times faster than sales productivity. We conclude that comparing these measures aids our understanding of the distinct effects of quantity of goods sold and value of retail services provided on output and productivity. https://lnkd.in/d7Z2_cAa

  • Although the construction industry is highly cyclical, over the long run employment growth is mainly driven by the demand for more homes, offices, stores, schools, factories, and other structures built to meet the needs of a growing population and a growing economy. This continues to be the story for the 2023–33 projections—long-term structural growth led by moderate population growth and more building activity. https://lnkd.in/gYsnsip5

  • The geometric Young formula for elementary aggregate import and export price indexes In this article, we examine historical U.S. Import and Export Price Indexes (MXPIs) by using the geometric Young formula at the two lowest index levels, which are the weight-group level and the classification-group level. MXPIs are currently calculated with a modified Laspeyres (Lowe) formula through multiple levels of aggregation between input prices and an output headline index. https://lnkd.in/guiVbYs5

  • Incorporating AI impacts in BLS employment projections: occupational case studies In the last few years, artificial intelligence (AI) has advanced rapidly, finding growing applications across industries and occupations. This development has generated interest in how the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics assesses and incorporates AI’s potential labor market impacts in its employment projections. In this article, we explain the Bureau’s approach to this type of projections work, illustrating it with several occupational case studies based on research done for the 2023–33 projections cycle. The case studies focus on selected occupations in the computer, legal, business and financial, and architecture and engineering occupational groups.
