Thank you to all of you that reached out regarding Strategic Project Solutions' 24the anniversary. Seems like just yesterday we launched SPS with the sole purpose of providing the production control solution for Heathrow T5. Thinking we would do T5 then get back to being contractors we have been on a journey that has been nothing short of remarkable. The trust our customers have bestowed upon us, the projects we have had the honor to be part of and most importantly the numerous friends and colleagues we have come to know along the way have made this experience nothing short of incredible. Is accepted practice negatively impacting #project economics for owners? Does the current approach use more cash than needed resulting in less than optimal #NPV / #IRR / #ROIC, etc.? Work in process (not the same as work in progress) is the proxy for time and time is money. More WIP, more cash, more time, longer to #payback. We all know too little WIP too makes it take longer, but so does too much WIP! What are your thoughts?

Stanford University SCPD / Project Production Institute Introduction to Modern Construction course is being held in Lima, Peru this week led by Martin Fischer, H. James Choo and Roberto J. Arbulu. Participants are exploring how Operations Science is used to design and optimize project #productionsystems from #design through #construction including the application of offsite assembly, #industrializedconstruction and various supporting technologies. Project Production Management and its underlying foundation of Operations Science enables projects to be delivered faster, safer, with less environmental impact, at lower cost and with less use of cash, predictably. An astonishing report out from McKinsey & Company today. Not only do we need to recruit and develop skilled professionals, we also need to optimize how we do work in the shop and on the construction site. Time to get serious and take the bull by the horns! BUILT2 and the Project Production Institute are preparing a call to action to all you construction superintendents and foreman. Stay tuned.

Pondering the question of should #construction schedules be no more than a dashboard. Clearly schedules are needed to define the demand for the #productionsystem but are schedules the best means for #trackingprogress? Seems we are trying to use schedules to 1) model demand - what needs to be done by who, when, 2) to track and forecast progress and 3) as a legal instrument including analysis of claims. But these uses seem to be at odds. Why not use the schedule for what it is designed to do, provide the forecasted demand (that will for sure change over time) and use more robust and advanced means of tracking / forecasting progress? As for schedules being used as a legal instrument, other than the attorneys and claims consultants propose it is best to move on. What are your thoughts?
