In October 2024, Build U.P. UNC launched the Better Block Initiative, a tactical urbanism project on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, NC. Tactical urbanism is a strategy that uses small-scale, temporary changes in underutilized public spaces—such as along Franklin Street's sidewalks—to inspire long-term improvements. We held our first iteration of the Better Block Initiative after less than one month of planning and well within our $100 budget! Complete with tables, chairs, public art (origami!), and simple games for kids, it was a huge success. Many community members used the outdoor furniture to do homework, sip coffee, and meet with friends, while dozens more offered their vision for Franklin Street on our interactive poster. Throughout the fall, we held two more similar events at the same location on Franklin Street. Each iteration yielded new successes, and I was overjoyed to see families enjoying all aspects of our installation. Moreover, I am grateful for the connections I made throughout Chapel Hill while planning and executing the project, including with Tasmaya Lagoo of the Town of Chapel Hill, Jeri Lynn Schulke of Downtown Chapel Hill Partnership, and Don and Mario of Orange County Waste and Recycling. This spring, I am excited to share that we will be continuing our work on the Better Block Initiative. Our first iteration this year will likely take place on February 1st before the UNC vs. Duke basketball game. I'd like to thank Claire Hargrove, Mia Iwakura, and all of Build U.P. for their trust and support throughout this project, and I look forward to seeing the Better Block Initiative grow and thrive this year!
