A flaky test is arguably worse than no test at all. It may pass or fail based on any random event—for example, if a race condition occurs or if a shared cache is not reset in time. Over the past year, I’ve spoken with many of the world’s leading software teams about how they test and ship their code and why they have an almost insatiable appetite for fast delivery. Then, last month on Acquired, Mark Zuckerberg?summed it up perfectly: “If we can learn faster than every other company, we’re going to win. We’re going to build a better product than everyone else because we’re going to get it out first, we’re going to have a good feedback loop, and we’re going to learn what people like better than other people.” So it’s not surprising the best companies in the world are laser-focused? on delivery, they ship based on what they learned only hours earlier and compound knowledge at breakneck speed. They leave no stone unturned and relentlessly find ways to optimize their build and delivery process, starting with testing, which often accounts for most of the build time. This is how they ship faster than their competitors and this is how they win.
