Last week, we attended the Historic Seattle Awards Gala to celebrate Washington Park’s recognition as the Best Preservation Project. During the event, BuildingWork Partner Kate Weiland, AIA, discussed the design process behind Washington Park and the importance of its preservation, particularly in its reconnection to the waterfront following the removal of Seattle’s viaduct. Originally built as a printing press plant for the Lowman & Hanford Stationery and Printing Company in 1890, the historic Washington Park Building is one of many buildings our team is preserving and transforming in Seattle’s Pioneer Square Preservation District. Along with a full seismic retrofit, our design blends contemporary function with historic architecture, including a penthouse addition with expansive views of the Port of Seattle and Elliott Bay. Thank you, Historic Seattle, for an inspiring night celebrating exceptional projects that preserve and protect Seattle’s built heritage. We’re pleased to announce that our Washington Park project received the 2024 Best Preservation Project Award from Historic Seattle. This prestigious honor celebrates the rehabilitation, restoration, and adaptive reuse of historic properties in the Puget Sound region that adhere to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Originally built in 1890 as a printing press plant, Washington Park is now revitalized with contemporary functionality and carefully preserved architecture. To maintain the building's historic facade, we set back the new rooftop penthouse, which features sliding glass walls and panoramic views of Puget Sound, from the street. In line with the Federal Historic Tax Credit program, we rehabilitated the original wood windows and replicated the building’s decorative cornice, lost in the 1949 earthquake. Additionally, we completed a comprehensive seismic retrofit, adding steel braced frames, concrete shear walls, and new mezzanines for additional tenant space and mid-floor support for the unreinforced masonry walls. Thank you for the recognition, Historic Seattle! It is a privilege to contribute to the revitalization of Pioneer Square and to preserve the rich history of Washington Park for years to come.
