Together, we launched the?Supply Chain Information Series, an initiative that brought forward meaningful conversations about building a thriving and sustainable future for our region’s pharmaceutical manufacturing and workforce development. We’re proud to celebrate Alliance member Phlow, a U.S.-based certified B Corporation by B Lab U.S. & Canada, for reaching a major milestone in reshoring America’s medicine supply. Phlow has successfully completed a process validation campaign for Epinephrine active pharmaceutical ingredient production — a critical step toward full domestic manufacturing of this life-saving medicine. “This milestone represents a meaningful step forward in our vision of creating the future of how medicines are made in America,” said Eric Edwards, MD, PhD, CEO and co-founder of Phlow. “We’re proud to lead a movement that’s bringing pharmaceutical development and manufacturing back to the United States with purpose, precision, and impact. This latest achievement underscores Phlow’s commitment to providing secure, domestic sources for active pharmaceutical ingredients vital to patient care and national security — doing so with relentless innovation and a collaborative spirit.” Phlow has filed a Drug Master File with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration — an essential regulatory milestone. The entire API manufacturing process has taken place in the U.S., reinforcing Phlow’s commitment to strengthening national health resilience through domestic production. Phlow’s novel chemistry-based manufacturing method streamlines production, reduces waste and costs, and makes U.S.-based Epinephrine production cost-competitive. This generic, life-saving medication—used in emergencies like cardiac arrest, septic shock, and anaphylaxis—has been in chronic shortage for more than 13 years. To date, Phlow has filed four DMFs, further solidifying its role as a leader in reshoring critical active pharmaceutical ingredients. This achievement exemplifies what’s possible when we collaborate to build better medicine systems—right here at home. The Central Virginia region is continuing to expand its BioHealth entrepreneurship and community development activities thanks to a multimillion-dollar award from the Commonwealth’s GO Virginia economic development program and close partnerships between the Virginia Biotech Research Park Authority, its nonprofit affiliate (Activation Capital), Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond’s GROW Capital Jobs, and area economic development organizations. The award will add a vital business component to the state’s existing biotech ecosystem to bolster the success of high-potential, early-stage life sciences companies. This project was funded in part by GO Virginia, a state-funded initiative administered by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) that strengthens and diversifies Virginia’s economy and fosters the creation of higher-wage jobs in strategic industries. GO Virginia approved a $14.3 million funding package to three Virginia biotech accelerator organizations in response to a multiregional proposal called “Project VITAL: Virginia Innovations and Technology Advancements in Life Sciences.” Each organization is collaborating with nearby research universities to build on biotech research and expansion in their regions. VBRPA-Activation Capital received $5 million of the award which will be used to provide regional BioHealth startups with operational support, acceleration programming, and event opportunities to showcase their technologies. The award also creates “soft-landing” opportunities for startups interested in locating in the Richmond area and “space-making” to enhance the lab and co-working facilities available to startups in the VA Bio+Tech Park.
