How do you spot a toxic workplace BEFORE you take the job? ?? In our latest Hot Takes livestream, Orlando Haynes and I shared real stories about toxic jobs and how to avoid landing in a similar situation in the future. Here are 5 red flags to watch out for when evaluating a potential position: 1?? Ambiguous Answers: If leadership can’t clearly explain their work culture, job expectations, or conflict resolution process during your interview, it could indicate hidden dysfunction. 2?? Micromanagement: Watch for leaders who want control over every detail or neglect to give employees autonomy. Without trust, burnout becomes inevitable. 3?? High Turnover Rates: LinkedIn Premium shows average tenure and headcount changes on company pages. A short median tenure might mean poor employee satisfaction or management issues. 4?? Work-Life Boundary Violations: If expectations to work after hours or while taking PTO are the norm, it could be a sign of a toxic environment without work-life balance. 5?? Emotional Dysregulation: Investigate how leaders handle conflict or stress. Abusive behavior, whether through yelling or manipulation, is a major red flag. What red flags have you encountered? #CareerTips #JobSearch #Leadership #EmpoweredByAnne #CareerCoach

Is AI the future of job searching or a shortcut to nowhere? ?? With technology advancing at lightning speed, more job seekers are turning to AI tools like ChatGPT to craft resumes, cover letters, and even psychometric test responses during the job search process. A recent survey by Neurosight revealed that 57% of young job seekers have admitted to using AI to support their job applications. But how do recruiters feel about this? Some recruiters feel overwhelmed with an onslaught of automated, low-quality applications, and are concerned about the authenticity and originality of applications. On the other hand, some applicants feel that AI tools help level the playing field, especially for those who struggle with communication skills. What's more, companies themselves are using AI tools to source and qualify candidates. This raises an important question: Should job seekers use AI in their job applications? Vote in the poll, and share your thoughts in the comments below! ?? Whether you’re a job seeker or a recruiter, your perspective plays an important role in this evolving discussion. ________ #AI #JobSearch #CareerAdvice #CareerCoach #EmpoweredByAnne

This mistake can cost you BIG. (I'm talking promotions, pay, growth, and new opportunities.) One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is treating the job search like a faucet: turning it on only when needed and off when not. While this approach used to land you a job, in today's market, it only leads to rejections, frustration, and burnout. Instead, you can unleash your career potential with a Steady Stream Strategy. Here’s how it works: ?? Consistency: Always be in job search mode, even when you’re not actively looking. ?? Upskilling: Continuously learn and develop new skills to stay competitive. ?? Networking: Regularly grow your network and engage with new people. ?? Thought Leadership: Share insights and engage in industry discussions to build your professional brand. (Hint: LinkedIn is the best place for this.) You don’t have to scour job boards daily, but maintaining a steady stream of these activities will keep you prepared and ahead in your career journey. Watch the video to learn more about how this strategy can help you achieve your career goals. Want more tips? Job Search Pro Tip! ?? Here’s a low-lift way to stand out in your search.?? Did you know you can express interest in working for a company without applying for a specific role? Just click the "I'm Interested" button, a little-known LinkedIn tool located on a company’s page. (Note: Not every company page has one.) Even if there are no current roles available, this feature can put you on the radar of recruiters at your ideal companies. WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: ╰┈??A company’s culture can make or break an employee’s experience, so successful job seekers prioritize businesses that align with their personal values. ╰┈??Signaling interest shows your proactive approach, and it helps you target your search to only those companies where you know you’ll thrive. HOW IT HELPS YOUR JOB SEARCH: ╰┈??Recruiters at the company can view your profile when searching for candidates who expressed interest. ╰┈??It increases your visibility and can lead to early notifications about job openings, giving you a head start in the application process. ?? HOW TO USE THE TOOL: 1. Go to the LinkedIn page of the company you're interested in. 2. Navigate to the About or Life Tab and search for the “I’m Interested” button. (You can also find it in the "about the company" section of job details pages). 3. Click "I'm Interested" to alert the company recruiters. After signaling your interest, you'll be prompted to create job alerts for similar opportunities. ?? Remember: ??You can express interest for up to 50 companies. Prioritize your choices to help you get discovered by the companies that matter most. ??Your interest will expire after a year, so make sure to update it if needed. ??Only recruiters and hiring managers within the company can see your interest, keeping your job search private. Taking this small step can significantly boost your job search by making you a top-of-mind candidate for future openings. #JobSearchTips #CareerAdvice #LinkedIn #EmpoweredByAnne #CareerCoach

When you’re searching every job board, submitting 100s of applications, and going on 5+ rounds of interviews per role…while working a full-time job. ?? Today’s job search is like a high-stakes fire-juggling balancing act, where you're constantly dodging obstacles and trying not to get burned. It can be intense, overwhelming, and enough to elicit a melt down. But every skilled performer knows that focus and strategic direction can be the path to success. Here are 5 smart job search strategies to help avoid burnout and make the process more streamlined: ╰┈??Set Clear Goals: Define a specific role you’re targeting, and align your professional messaging to highlight achievements that make you a strong candidate for that role. This focused approach will help you stand out to hiring managers and increase your chances of success. ╰┈??Prioritize Quality Over Quantity: Instead of mass-applying to every job posting, apply only to those where you’re a strong match and you’re genuinely interested because it aligns with your strengths and values. ╰┈??Engage with Target Companies on LinkedIn: Identify 10 ideal companies you’d like to work for, and show interest by liking, commenting, and sharing posts on their company LinkedIn pages. This engagement signals your interest and can get you noticed by recruiters and hiring managers. ╰┈??Leverage Your Network: Make a regular habit of reaching out to connections, attending industry events, and engaging on professional platforms. Building relationships can open doors to opportunities that aren’t advertised. ╰┈??Create a Job Search Schedule: Allocate specific times for job searching, networking, and self-care. Do you put too much pressure on yourself? Here are few tips to encourage more self-compassion, which leads to empowered action.
Your Career Coach | I empower managers, directors & VPs to command premium pay without sacrificing flexibility | ?? LinkedIn Top Voice | Leadership & Career Development ?? | Seen in The New York Times & Business Insider
High achievers, listen up. It’s time for a reality check. Ever feel like you're constantly pushing yourself to do more, achieve more, and be more? You're not alone. I've had countless clients come to me feeling anxious because they aren't seeing the professional growth they envisioned, landing job offers as quickly as they’d like, or getting promoted when they believe they should. The common thread? They're holding themselves to standards that are nearly impossible to meet. So, why do we do this? ?? Pursuit of Perfection: Many of us equate success with perfection, even though that's rarely the case. Unrealistic benchmarks for success can cause a relentless cycle of perfectionism and disappointment when the goals are unachievable. Sound familiar? ?? Playing the Comparison Game: Constantly measuring our achievements against others' successes makes for a miserable experience. It's hard not to compare when we’re bombarded with other people's highlights on social media. ?? Fear of Letting People Down: The anxiety of not meeting others' expectations is crushing. Many would rather push themselves to the limit than risk failure and judgement from others. ?? Desire for Control: There's comfort in feeling in control, but in reality, we can't control everything. Trying to micromanage every part of our lives is neither healthy nor productive. These pressures often stem from societal influences, personal insecurities, and a desire for external validation and achievement. Here’s the truth: The pressure we put on ourselves is often far greater than what anyone else expects of us. It’s time to release the shackling "shoulds" that hold us back. ? Celebrate Everyone's Wins: When you see someone else's achievements, remember that life is not a zero sum game. There are plenty of wins to go around, and you can have them too. Your win is coming. ? Shift Your Focus: Concentrate on progress, not perfection. Every action you take is getting you one step closer to your goal. ? Be Kind to Yourself: Treat yourself with the same compassion you would offer a friend, stranger, or a child. Remember, your journey is unique. Embrace it, and let go of the unnecessary pressure. ?? Job board application numbers aren't what they appear to be. Click to find out why.
Your Career Coach | I empower managers, directors & VPs to command premium pay without sacrificing flexibility | ?? LinkedIn Top Voice | Leadership & Career Development ?? | Seen in The New York Times & Business Insider
When a job has 500 applicants 1 hour after posting: ?? It's easy to feel discouraged when you see a flood of applications immediately after a job is posted. But don't let those numbers deter you from applying. The high number of applicants may be scary, but the job board numbers are deceiving. How? The count can include people who merely clicked on the job posting link but didn't finish their applications. And many applications come from unqualified candidates using AI tools like LazyApply or the "easy apply" button to cast a wide net. Consider this: Recruiter Claudia Garcia posted a remote recruiter position last year and received 1,200+ applications. However, only 15 candidates were qualified with the minimum requirements to be sent to the hiring manager. Even if the odds look long, it's still worth applying if you meet the minimum qualifications and know you're a great fit. And remember: Personal outreach to the hiring manager can set you apart from the crowd and showcase your genuine interest and initiative. #JobSearch #CareerAdvice #JobApplications #careercoach #EmpoweredByAnne

If you're only focusing on your resume, you're missing out.

Hot Take??: Your resume isn't going to land you a job. Here's why. ?? It's simply a tool to open the door for an interview. That's when the magic happens: connecting with your future manager, sharing the context behind your achievements, and demonstrating how you're perfectly poised to solve their most pressing problems. LinkedIn research shows: ╰┈??73% of people are hired through networking. ╰┈??70% had a personal connection within the company they were hired. ╰┈??49% of hiring managers pay closer attention to resumes referred by a connection. Hiring managers are looking for your potential—how you'll be the best person to address their pain points and surpass their business goals. Yes, your resume plays an important role in telling your story, your impact, and your potential. But it's just one resource in your job search toolkit. Consider this: One of my clients spent months perfecting her resume but got little traction. It wasn't until she started actively networking and engaging on LinkedIn that she landed multiple interviews and her ultimate job offer. Other essential job search tools include: ? Building genuine connections ? Nurturing your existing network ? Demonstrating thought leadership ? Cultivating a powerful professional brand on LinkedIn So, consider this your permission slip to stop hyper-focusing on your resume, and instead embrace the entire job search toolkit.
