When organizations realize it is time to “retool” their asset management program and to improve the effectiveness of their CMMS (computerized maintenance management system), one of the early decisions that needs to be made is what type of asset numbering system should be used. There are two basic choices – a “smart” numbering system or a “simple serialized” numbering system. The decision you make has a significant impact on the effort and cost. We at BMOC frequently run into legacy “smart” numbering asset identifier approaches. A “smart” number is an asset identifier that incorporates some basic information about an asset such that it can be rapidly understood by the staff fulfilling the work order. A “simple serialized” numbering system is simply that, a number – nothing more, nothing less. “Smart Number:” B1234-AHU-004 vs. “Simple Serialized Number:” 3530298 We strongly urge organizations to avoid “smart” numbering systems.
