Isabel Acuna, BioMed Realty Director, Development: “I have been in the real estate industry most of my life, and I’m still loving it. I started working as a laborer for my father, the best and most talented builder that I have ever known. One of my earliest memories of a construction site was an all-day concrete pour. I could barely walk or talk, but my father carried me around explaining everything related to the pour: why it had to be continuous, how the rebar works, why that size of aggregate, why it had to be vibrated but not too much, etc. Although I had no clue what he was talking about or even what the words meant, I almost knew back then what my career would be.?That was the beginning of my professional journey. I chose to study civil and structural engineering to follow my father’s footsteps. I started in Mexico and concluded my education here in the US, after being admitted at one of the best engineering schools, MIT. Many years later, I am back in Cambridge and Kendall Square, at the same place where my professional career started. I joined BioMed Realty almost 3 years ago, to lead the development and construction for one of the largest projects that the company has ever undertaken, 585 Kendall. This will be one of the most beautiful, state-of-the-art, life science facilities (where 'art meets science,' to quote our Senior VP Salvatore Zinno). And, for the first time in my career, a lot of the team members are women. BET believes our strengths include the ability to focus on the underlying engineering issues. We apply a holistic approach to building envelope systems that enables us to provide our clients with sustainable structures using affordable building technology. BET is an architectural engineering firm formed by seasoned professionals who recognize that today’s building profession challenges demand, not only technical confidence and effective management, but also precise communication. We focus on meeting this challenge for our clients. BET is experienced in every aspect of building enclosure systems’ technology. More specifically, our experience includes roofs, facades; fenestration, curtainwalls, waterproofing, and such other building elements as may be associated with the construction and preservation of building exteriors. BET is providing expert services for these building concerns to other architects involved in new and existing building design programs, for owners engaged in the care of existing structures, for contractors seeking technical assistance, and in matters of expert opinion.
