Designing a resilient future through architecture education. A collaboration between 6 Irish schools of architecture

关于我们

Under the Human Capital Initiative administered by Higher Education Authority, the six schools of architecture in Ireland (situated, respectively, in Technological University Dublin, University College Dublin, the University of Limerick, South East Technological University, Atlantic Technological University and the Cork Centre for Architecture Education, a joint initiative of University College Cork and Munster Technological University), have formed a national strategic partnership to deliver the Building Change project. The project is undertaking a transformative process, reconfiguring and revising the professional curricula in architecture to empower future graduates with the knowledge, skills and, most importantly, the mind-set, to help society address the sustainability challenges encapsulated in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030, with particular focus on Climate Action (SDG 13.3) and Affordable Sustainable Housing (SDG 11.1), and as reflected in Irish government policies of Housing for All and the Climate Action Plan, and contextualised within the Places for People, National Policy on Architecture. Project participants from the schools of architecture include over 700 students and 70 academic staff. Each of the six academic partners are working closely within their local ecosystem to engage with a range of external stakeholders to share, build capacity, and enhance best-practice through co-creating solutions as joint partners to tackle climate change and the housing crisis.

“Constructive Interference briefly interjected itself into the popular architectural narrative, relaying a resounding consensus from students that climate-conscious design is the new baseline, and that we must develop a new architectural tradition founded in circularity, non-extractive practice, and reuse.” We asked Nicolas Howden of Rubble to share his reflections on the recent Constructive Interference exhibition at the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) Architecture and Building Expo where all six of our partner universities exhibited their work. • Form or function - How do architects strike the perfect balance? This and more were on the agenda for South East Technological University 4th year students at a workshop led by Marcello Turrini and Tom O’Brien on sustainable energy applications and modelling. Students investigated real-life case studies to demonstrate how design elements affect energy efficiency and included discussions on the trade-off between aesthetics and performance. This hands-on workshop, with Dr Turrini’s step-by-step explanations, helped students bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical implementation.

  • Architecture education isn't just about design - it's about ethical responsibility to our societies and the environment. At Building Change, we believe this ethos is key to tackling the challenges of our built environment and transforming how we teach and learn to build a better future together.

  • Rising sea levels call for innovative design. South East Technological University's vertical studio project ‘Post-Apocalyptic Utopia’ challenged students to think laterally about the issue of rising sea levels by envisioning the future of Waterford city. For this one-week project, students were given license to imagine a utopian future by bridging reality and optimism, and using creative solutions to address the challenges low-lying cities will face from climate change. The students’ ideas were compiled into short films, using sketches, photos, diagrams, animations and voice-overs to convey their projected utopia.

  • Throwback to our second student symposium in University of Limerick last year. This unique event brought together students from every school of architecture on both sides of the border to share their learnings from Building Change’s hands-on pilot projects, and informed our transformation of the architecture curricula, putting power into the hands of our future architects. What are adaptive re-use and life cycle analysis? University College Cork and Munster Technological University students engaged with The Patrician Academy School Mallow to get real world experience with these topics. By evaluating existing buildings on campus for potential reuse and researching the life cycle of various materials, the students enhanced their understanding of material selection for their hypothetical school designs.
