Building Bridges is a joint initiative, launched in 2019 by Swiss public authorities, the finance community, the United Nations, NGOs and other international actors. It aims to accelerate the transition to a global economic model aligned with both social and environmental sustainability principles, as articulated in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At the core of the initiative is the recognition that the scale and complexity of the sustainability transition require “building bridges” between the numerous private and public stakeholders involved. Building Bridges aims to shape the global sustainable finance agenda, through leveraging the unique ecosystem of the international Geneva and Switzerland. Our mission is to create the right conditions to optimally channel public and private capital into prosperity-generating activities, while preserving or restoring the delicate balance of our planet. The Building Bridges community meets every year around its flagship event in Geneva. All relevant decision makers and experts from the finance and corporate sectors, government, civil society, academia and sustainable development communities gather around a common agenda. This 4 day event provides a unique platform to share, learn and act, in a collective way.

These last few weeks, I can’t help but think about an important question: Will all those big financial commitments to the SDGs actually materialize with traditional funding mechanisms now facing such extraordinary pressure? The current situation adds unexpected relevance to questions I asked financial leaders at December's joint Building Bridges and United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) plenary in Geneva. Our discussions about private-public collaboration, and how they can translate conventional sustainability commitments into actionable funding frameworks, now face a real-world test as the development community confronts an unprecedented funding gap.
