Putting final touches on my upcoming India Game Developer Conference workshop! This one is about humans and estimation, why our intuitions often mess us up, and how to become better calibrated no matter what you're trying to predict or estimate. One thing I talk about in estimation: ranges. Too often when people ask for and provide estimates, they think in terms of a specific, precise value. A single value fails to capture one of the most important things you can learn from estimation: how much uncertainty there is with the estimate. Even if you know and communicate that a lot of uncertainty exists, people will see that simple, solitary number and figure we have things well in hand. I'm not saying everyone should start communicating in ranges when estimating - honestly, that's probably a good way to annoy people who don't know much about the topic. Some of those people might be senior leaders in your company! What I am saying is that even if you start THINKING in ranges (and encourage your team to do so), even if rules and process force you to come up with a single, precise number/date/etc., that number will be more likely to be correct, AND you'll have realized and can then work to reduce the amount of uncertainty that is present if that's helpful.
