In Milwaukee, union construction stands out as a crucial workforce pipeline that better meets the city’s construction demands compared to non-union counterparts. Milwaukee's local building trades have seen record high apprenticeship participation in the past several years. “Seeing record-breaking apprenticeship numbers shows how our signatory contractors are investing in their future,” says Chris Valerine, Steamfitters Local 601 Training Director. “These new apprentices aren’t just replacing retiring workers—they’re filling additional workforce demands across major projects throughout our jurisdiction, expanding our market share and organization from within. In honor of #NationalApprenticeshipWeek, hear from David Polk, Director of the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development’s Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards, about the benefits of #registeredapprenticeship. Union registered apprenticeship in the building trades PAYS you to LEARN. Apprentices receive classroom and on-the-job training from safe, experienced tradespeople. Depending on the trade you choose, apprenticeship can span between three to five years. New apprentices start by performing less complicated tasks while assisting on the job site and perform more technical aspects of the trade as they progress in their apprenticeship. Your wages also increase as you progress in your apprenticeship. This year's Building Advantage Construction Career Fair was one for the books! We're incredibly grateful for all of the schools, students, union trades, contractors, industry organizations and local leaders that supported and participated in our annual career fair at Fiserv Forum. A record-breaking 1,200 juniors and seniors from 48 schools learned about #earnwhileyoulearn careers in the building trades while participating in fun, hands-on activities.
