Do you lower your expectations after being let down? As it turns out, bees do, too. New research from Newcastle University shows that physically stressed bumblebees are less likely to expect high rewards when faced with ambiguous choices. In an active choice judgment bias test, stressed bees chose low-reward locations more often, suggesting a pessimistic bias similar to emotion-like states seen in other animals. This study sheds light on how stress influences insect cognition and behavior, offering new perspectives for pollinator conservation. Do you know how to tell the difference between old and young bees?
How to tell the difference between young and old bumblebees: ?? Faded colouring from time in the sun. ???? Bald spot, especially on top of the thorax, where hairs have rubbed off. ?? Uneven wing edges. These are signs of everyday wear and tear, not just age-related issues. In spring, queen bumblebees are box-fresh, having spent winter tucked up in hibernation. Workers and males, on the other hand, are out and about in the sunshine, foraging from flowers and bashing through vegetation – therefore, they show these signs more quickly. ?? Tom Luck
