BUSPH researcher Justin White recently led a novel study that found that embedding a game within a smoking cessation app boosted user engagement and made users more likely to abstain from smoking. This is an important finding on methods to increase app engagement, the key to actually making mobile apps effective for treatment. Dr. White's study is the first to assess the gamification of an existing smoking cessation app, which is significant as many users prefer to turn to apps like this rather than pursuing clinical counseling and medication. #smokingcessation #mentalhealth #healthtechnology Read about the study here: https://hubs.la/Q02XznL10

A recent study led by BUSPH assistant professor of health law, policy, and management, Kevin Nguyen, PhD, demonstrates how social risk factors disproportionately affect sexual and gender minorities, who are more likely to experience life dissatisfaction and stress due to unique discrimination and stigmatization. This research emphasizes the importance of enacting policies and support systems that will sustain mental health and socioeconomic improvements for LGBTQ+ communities. #mentalhealth #lgbtqhealth #sexualhealth #healthequity Read more here: https://hubs.la/Q02XzlYP0

In a recent piece with Stanford researchers, BUSPH assistant professor of global health, Nina Brooks, discusses how the outcomes of U.S. elections have significant consequences for women's health globally. The authors highlight how changing U.S. administrations determine the aid that directly affects reproductive health services worldwide, and how important it is for advocates to continue pushing to keep policies that protect the health of all women. #womenshealth #politicisandhealth #globalhealth #reproductiverights #healthpolicy Read more: https://hubs.la/Q02Xy_y40

This Veteran's Day, we revisit a study coauthored by BUSPH researchers Rachel Sayko Adams and Jaimie Gradus, which highlights variations in accidental death rates among U.S. soldiers deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq. This research sheds light on the unique risks service members face post-deployment and emphasizes the importance of targeted support to prevent deaths. Examining these disparities can also inform the timing of targeted prevention efforts, particularly in the immediate years post-deployment. #veteranhealth #mentalhealth #prevention Read more: https://hubs.la/Q02XyMW20

Access to safe, clean sanitation facilities is essential to the health of populations. Since 2010, Professor Anoop Jain has been directing an organization dedicated to improving sanitation access in India's most impoverished areas. The organization operates shared toilet facilities that serve about 8,000 people daily and is working hard to scale up and develop tools to keep these facilities safe and clean. Dr. Jain recently received an #ideahub Early Career Catalyst Award to continue to move this work forward. #globalhealth #sanitationaccess #environmentaljustice #publichealth #healthequity Read more: https://hubs.la/Q02WGnRN0

The rise of anti-intellectualism in U.S. politics threatens democracy and public trust in science, SPH professor Matt Motta argues in his new book. By exploring the historical roots and current landscape of anti-science rhetoric, Motta's book highlights how misinformation is shaping policy and public discourse, and expands on his research about the politicization of public health issues. #publichealthpolicy #politicsandhealth #publicperception Read more: https://hubs.ly/Q02Wjjmg0

BUSPH researcher Kimberly Nelson recently led an analysis that assessed state legislation across the country, and found that in the past several years, more than half of U.S. states passed discriminatory laws are threatening the health and well-being of marginalized groups, and the damage is already evident. As these harmful policies spread across the U.S., policymakers, researchers, and experts are being urged to work together to protect the rights of vulnerable populations. #healthdisparities #healthlaw #lgbtqhealth #genderaffirmingcare Read more about the impact of these laws and the urgent need for coordinated action: https://hubs.la/Q02S_cD10

A recent study led by School of Public Health researcher Salma Abdalla gathered data from eight countries to demonstrate that social determinants not only influence health, but also shape how people actually think about their health. The study showed that urbanicity influenced people's opinions about which social factors they thought contributed to their health the most. These findings highlight the importance of tailoring public health communications to the specific needs of diverse communities. #urbanhealth #globalhealth #healthequity #socialdeterminantsofhealth Check out more of the unique study's insights here: https://hubs.la/Q02S_v1h0
