The health effects of traffic-related air pollution in the United States are well-documented, but the data on this public health burden is much more limited at the local level. A recent study coauthored by BUSPH assistant professor Jonathan Buonocore quantifies these health consequences in Greater Boston and found vehicular emissions cause 342 premature deaths each year in Greater Boston. This data can inform city-level polices that will improve health and prevent premature death. #pollution #airquality #prematuredeath #publichealthpolicy Read more: https://hubs.la/Q03b6WRk0

New legislation in Utah will allow patients to retroactively withdraw consent for procedures, placing an unreasonable burden on providers and almost certainly resulting in restricted access to care for vulnerable patients. A recent perspective from #BUSPH associate professor Kimberly Nelson draws attention to the ripple effect this law will have on the healthcare system and clinician practice in other states, even outside of gender-affirming care. #LGBTQ+health #healthpolicy #minorconsent Read here: https://hubs.la/Q039GXtT0

Americans are dying younger—some much younger, according to a new study led by Professor Andrew Stokes. After comparing mortality trends from the early 2000s with those of today, researchers found what they called “excess deaths” had surged among people aged between 25 and 44. Excess deaths are those above what had been projected for a given period. In an era when we assume each generation will live longer than the one before it, why are so many younger adults dying before their time? #publichealth #mortalityresearch #prematuredeath Read more: https://hubs.la/Q036PwZ70

Does how you vote influence your health decisions? BUSPH researchers Matt Motta and Timothy Callaghan have launched a timely research initiative aimed at responding to the increasing politicization of public health in the US. By exploring how political dynamics shape health policies and perceptions, their Politics and Health Lab seeks to foster collaboration and trust across ideological divides and to dismantle poor policies that harm health. #politicsandhealth #healthpolicy #publichealthresearch Read more about their insight here: https://hubs.la/Q036PB0T0

BUSPH associate professor M. Patricia Fabián has been awarded a $3.2M grant to expand her expertise on the impact of extreme heat on public health. This grant will enable an interdisciplinary collaboration of faculty, staff, and students to dive deeper into how rising temperatures disproportionately affect vulnerable communities in cities, driving efforts to develop innovative solutions for urban heat mitigation. #climatechange #urbanheat #sustainability #environmentaljustice Read more about this exciting work: https://hubs.la/Q036PspC0

Higher minimum prices on cigarettes led to a significant drop in sales in one California city, according to a new study led by #busph Professor Justin White. Interestingly, the study team observed that these policies didn't push consumers to purchase cigarettes in neighboring areas without the higher minimum prices. These findings reinforce that pricing policies are powerful tools to reduce tobacco consumption and can ultimately improve health outcomes for populations disproportionately impacted by tobacco-related morbidity. #healthpolicy #smokingcessation #tobacco #healthdisparities Read more: https://hubs.la/Q034HSHC0

Access to semaglutide, a novel, effective medication developed for diabetes and made popular for weight management, is heavily influenced by insurance coverage and employment type, according to a new study led by BUSPH's Andrew Stokes. When access to life-improving treatments is dictated by factors other than medical need, health disparities that disproportionately affect lower-income and marginalized communities are reinforced. #semaglutides #healthcareequity #obesity #access Read more: https://hubs.la/Q034HN870
