?? Exciting News from Buffalo String Works! ?? We are thrilled to welcome Melinda Smith as our new Executive Director starting in June! Melinda joins us from Freedom Network USA, where she led impactful initiatives in the fight against human trafficking. Her expertise in communication strategy, brand management, and fundraising will be invaluable to BSW. With a Masters in Social Work from the University at Buffalo and a BA in Political Science from Buffalo State College, Melinda's deep roots in our community make her a perfect fit for our mission. Melinda shared, "I am thrilled to join BSW and work with its amazing staff, teacher artists, students, families, and board. BSW is a creative home for refugee, immigrant, and historically marginalized youth, and I am inspired by its mission to use music as a universal language for social change." Our incoming Board Chair, Chirag Desai, expressed confidence in Melinda's ability to lead BSW into its next chapter. "Melinda's skills and experience are exactly what we need to continue our growth, build strong community partnerships, and champion our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging." Buffalo String Works is a creative and rigorous music program primarily serving refugee students in Buffalo, New York, inspired by the international El Sistema model which cultivates students to be agents of social change. Founded and led by local musicians, Buffalo String Works fosters hope and compassion through high-quality music instruction for refugee children arriving from nations including Burma, Eritrea, Thailand, and Somalia. Recognizing the significance of music as a universal language, we offer a creative outlet for children and their families who are searching for a sense of belonging in their new home. Our Mission: To ignite personal and community leadership through accessible, youth-centered music education.
