As a writer, words matter. During research for Strideful, I was intrigued by how people (including therapists) differentiate between exercise, physical activity, and movement. I recently had the opportunity to contribute to an article for Buffalo Spree Publishing, Inc. on this very topic. Exercise is a loaded word. For many, it conjures images of misery – burning muscles, gasping for air, and pools of sweat. Running, in particular, tends to get a bad rap. If you played almost any sport growing up, running was likely used as punishment. When that’s your experience of an activity, it makes total sense that you try to avoid it. But no matter how you define it, moving your body is good for both your body and brain. The activity and intensity aren’t nearly as important as enjoyment and consistency. These kinds of conversations are important for breaking down misconceptions and helping more people take care of themselves.
