Robert Paddock and @Helen Hemingway McLaughlin represented a Houston company that invested over $1 million in a rooftop solar business. Despite being in default under various promissory notes and a personal guaranty, the borrower and guarantor filed a lawsuit in Harris County alleging breach of contract and fraudulent inducement. The borrowers alleged that our client’s misrepresentation and breached caused them over $8,000,000 in damages. Lenders filed a counter claim against the Borrowers for breach of multiple promissory notes and breach of the personal guaranty. After almost a year of complicated litigation, Borrowers dropped all claims against our client. Buck Keenan LLP developed a strategic plan to protect our client from an $8,000,000 claim. Buck Keenan LLP partner John Dagley represented the independent executor of an estate in a will construction case brought by the testator’s step-children and step-grandchildren.? The dispute centered on whether an investment account worth approximately $2.5 million passed as a specific bequest under the will to the step-children and step-grandchildren or whether it passed to the testator’s nieces under the will’s residuary clause. After a trial in Probate Court No. 1, Montgomery County, Texas, Judge Kristin Bays presiding, the court denied all relief sought by the step-children and step-grandchildren and entered a judgment in favor of Buck Keenan’s client, holding that the investment account passed under the residuary clause and assessing all costs of court against the step-children and step-grandchildren. Sam possesses exceptional abilities in legal research, writing, and advocacy, which he will apply to our civil litigation practice. His experience encompasses commercial litigation, fiduciary disputes, and corporate governance. Sam obtained his Juris Doctor from South Texas College of Law Houston in 2024, where he distinguished himself in advocacy and leadership positions. His notable achievements include being recognized as a semi-finalist in the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition and securing the title of National Champion at the Leroy Hassell Constitutional Moot Court Competition. He was also inducted into the National Order of Barristers. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from The University of Texas at Austin, participating in the History Honors Program.
