PCs for People will be tabling, ready to refurbish your old electronics and distribute them to low-income individuals and families. This option is even better than recycling as you're extending the useful life of these items—a win-win for the environment and folks who need them! Below is a list of items PC's for People will be collecting. Be prepared to take home anything that's not listed below (though you know us, we'll be happy to discuss how to effectively recycle or reuse any other electronic gear)! Accepted Items: - Desktop or laptop computers - Phones - TVs and monitors (no CRTs) - Computer accessories (i.e. keyboards, mice, speakers) - Printers - Hard drives & other computer parts - Power cords & cables - Servers & networking equipment *Items can be in any condition; new, used, or broken.

The Plant is a 93,500 sq. ft. former meat packing plant in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood that has been repurposed into a research and production facility comprising a collaborative community of small food businesses. A complex and highly interrelated system, The Plant is a living laboratory that demonstrates techniques for reimagining waste as a resource, achieving economies of scale, and incubating small businesses. The goal of The Plant is to create replicable models for efficiencies that close loops of waste and energy and to encourage others to implement these techniques to combat climate change. The owner and operator of The Plant is Bubbly Dynamics, LLC, a social enterprise whose mission is to create replicable models for ecologically responsible and sustainable urban industrial development. Established in 2002, Bubbly Dynamics is dedicated to incubating small businesses in formerly vacant, industrial buildings located in disinvested communities, and sharing our findings on the creative approaches to resource and energy efficiencies via an open-sourced toolkit. Bubbly Dynamics' first project was the Chicago Sustainable Manufacturing Center located in the Stockyards Industrial Corridor. This 24,000 sq. ft. former paint warehouse was sustainably renovated using salvaged materials and green building techniques. It is now fully occupied with independent manufacturing businesses and artists.

Carolee Kokola, LEED AP is doing some R&D for a new food hub coming to The Plant (Chicago, IL)! She recently joined the Illinois Food System Infrastructure Collaborative on a field trip to Central Illinois, visiting Janie's Mill and Down at the Farms to learn about community-building and food aggregation. Exciting things are brewing!
The Illinois Food System Infrastructure Collaborative recently coordinated an informative and fun field trip in Central Illinois! We visited Janie's Mill and got down in the weeds about the challenges and successes that come with a passion for making good food. Then we were off to Down at the Farms to learn about their farm aggregation services, and the group had a deep discussion on how building community and cooperation is particularly mission-critical for small food and farming businesses. Thanks to Jill Brockman-Cummings and Harold Wilken at Janie's Mill, and to Marty Travis of Down at the Farms. None of them is active on LI since they're so busy doing what they do -- appreciate their taking the time to talk about it! What to do with old bicycles in repairable condition, gently used kids’ bikes, and worn-out bike parts and inner tubes? Bring them to Reuse-a-Palooza at The Plant on Sun. Mar. 16 for Working Bikes! Since its inception in 1999, the incredible Working Bikes community—including volunteers, staff, partners, and supporters—has given new life to over 100,000 bicycles worldwide and tens of thousands here in Chicago. Through their work, more than 100,000 people have gained access to resources and opportunities that might have otherwise been out of reach, all while reducing waste, cutting pollution, and improving public health.
