We have some exciting Boston University Climate Action news to share!!! Last month, members of Campus Planning & Operations, BU Sustainability, Financial Affairs, faculty and students came together to launch the work for CAP 1.2. This work focuses on updates to the University’s Climate Action Plan and how the University can decarbonize its existing building infrastructure. Led by Bill Walter and Dennis Carlberg, this working group will convene over the next several months to update the strategies necessary to meet the University's goal of net zero direct emissions by 2040.

People who have limited access to air conditioning may be at higher risk of seeking emergency care for health problems following exposure to wildfire smoke, according to a new study led by SPH. As Los Angeles County battles the most destructive wildfires in its history, a new study suggests that US policies should prioritize equity and education regarding the measures people can take to protect themselves from harmful pollutants in wildfire smoke. #LAWildfires Learn more ?? https://spr.ly/6040auwLa

Surprising findings from Mexico: a new study suggests that extreme heat may be more dangerous for young people than older adults. Researchers in Mexico analyzed data on all deaths in the country between 1998 and 2019 and found that when the temperature and humidity combined to create uncomfortable conditions, people between 18 and 35 were nine times more likely to die from heat-related causes than people over 50. Co-author faculty Patrick Kinney theorizes that the study likely included a higher proportion of outdoor workers exposed to heat compared to previous studies.
