We are leaders in research, education, and advocacy of mental health from a public health perspective.
关于我们
We are the only department of mental health in a school of public health in the U.S. We bring together experts across disciplines—from childhood adversity to aging, workplace health to global health—to understand mental health, prevent and manage mental health and substance use disorders, and advocate for improved access to mental health services. We study the determinants of mental health at each stage of the continuum from mental wellness to mental illness and identify determinants, develop and test interventions, and evaluate strategies for implementing and sustaining these interventions through evidence-based policy. Dedicated to advancing research and public health practice, not clinical training, our faculty are committed to educating the next generation of mental health researchers and professionals and giving students the foundational skills to improve mental health in their communities and globally.

"It would be impossible to conduct such large-scale studies without the support of federal grants." Nicholas Ialongo, professor in DMH, has led multiple large-scale studies that have facilitated the implementation of the Good Behavior Game, a team-based behavior management strategy designed to help children succeed in the classroom Thanks in large part to federal funding, researchers have trained more than 1,000 educators and student mental health professionals in the game, which in turn has impacted 20,000 elementary and middle school students in nearly 300 public schools in Baltimore and across Maryland. Now, cuts in grant funding are putting student-focused programs like this at risk. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dCbt8-sj

My 9 year old daughter took these photos of her mom, a published author and researcher ??? My three kids watched me bust my butt through my masters program while working full time and certifying as a doula. My son wrote on his preschool Mother's Day craft that I was "good at homework" ???? It was a challenge to go back to school at 34, and yet, I'm so glad I did. I'm grateful they got a front row seat to the full process unfolding before them. The applying, the acceptance, the good grades and the not so good grades, the preparation, the learning, the unlearning, the building, the celebrating of smart women. They told their classmates their mom is a scientist and someone who "helps other parents". Their watchful gazes and curious questions help sustain me through this work every day. No matter the age or stage, anytime we take a leap it is scary and challenging. That's where all the good stuff happens. That's where we grow. While this one book, one manuscript, isn't the full depth and breadth of the equally important and less visible work that happens in community, it is a beautiful milestone I'm choosing to celebrate. I was the first to go to college from my dad's family, and today I go show my grandma my name in this book. I can already hear her say, with her Italian New York accent, "with all them doctors??" ???? Damn, right, grandma!!!! Keep pushing, I'm with you! ??
