Two years in — has Legal AI delivered, or are we still stuck in first gear? When ChatGPT hit the scene, the legal world moved fast. AI went from a niche experiment to a must-have tool for law firms and legal teams. But are we where we thought we’d be? Before LLMs, only Legal Engineers could handle AI. Now, AI is in the hands of lawyers themselves — streamlining work and making legal teams more efficient. But is it working the way it should? On March 19, Maximilian Paterson will break it down: ?? The evolution of Legal AI – from complex tech to lawyer-friendly solutions ?? Investment & innovation – where the money is going and what’s driving real impact ?? Beyond the hype – what’s still holding Legal AI back ?? Practical takeaways – how firms are using AI today, and what’s next ?? ?March 19, 2025 | 10 AM EST | 3 PM GMT ?? https://lnkd.in/eVhC8YJW Michael Grupp Micha-Manuel Bues Joanna Sidhu #LegalAI #LegalTech #LawTech

If you know me, you know I’m not afraid to test things out—even if it means making a fool of myself. ?? Last week, during a panel discussion, Tom Braegelmann and I debated the adoption of GenAI beyond early adopters. My theory: Most people still aren’t using it. In the business world, I’d bet at least half haven’t used ChatGPT recently. And if that’s true, then the real mass market wave of GenAI is still ahead of us—including in legal. This isn’t just a gut feeling. It’s based on feedback from presentations, demos, and workshops. And outside of business? The gap is even bigger (I have heard similar observations from Nicola Shaver, Oz Benamram and Stefan C. Schicker recently). So, I hit the streets to gather some data. First stop: Union Square, NYC. I asked 17 random people: "Have you used ChatGPT in 2025"? Here are the results: ?? Only 6 out of 17 people had used it. ?? All young people (students, high schoolers) use it. ?? Most senior professionals haven’t tried it. ?? Businesspeople know about it—but many don’t actively use it. What does that mean? ?? Mass market adoption is still a loong time time to go ?? OpenAI still has a lot of room to grow - and #LegalAI, too. ?? Street interviews are harder than they look. ?? ?? Union Square might not be the best sample. Next stops: London, Berlin & Frankfurt. Let’s see if the trend holds. ?? Micha-Manuel Bues Joanna Sidhu Maximilian Paterson

The best conversations don’t happen on stage. ??? They happen the night before, over drinks, with no script and no filters. On the eve of the AI Forum of the German Lawyers' Association, we got together in Berlin for exactly that — a lively, unscripted debate on AI in legal. No slides. No easy answers. Just real talk about what’s happening now and what’s coming next. ? AI adoption is no longer theoretical – Lawyers are actively using AI, and it’s no longer confined to innovation teams. ? The shift is from speculation to expectation – Clients now assume AI-driven efficiency, encouraging law firms to modernize. ? Prompting has always been part of legal work – Lawyers have always refined arguments based on feedback; AI is now acting as a ‘sparring partner’ to accelerate this process. ? The industry is behind on mass adoption – While AI’s potential is clear, most legal teams are only just starting to integrate it into their workflows. Massive thanks to Tobias Kugler (CARIAD), Christoph Hedekamp (Hausfeld), and Tom Braegelmann (Annerton) for bringing the energy (and strong opinions). And to everyone who joined us — great to see so many familiar and new faces. We had a blast catching up with industry people, old friends and new faces at our BRYTER #Berlin drinks. AI isn’t waiting for law firms to catch up — it’s already inside the building. ??? Paul Armstrong's piece in City AM (link in comments) highlights a reality many firms are now facing: AI isn’t about replacing lawyers, but transforming how legal work gets done. The real challenge? “Shadow AI”. Half of employees globally use AI tools without employer approval. In legal, that means sensitive client data could already be sitting in external AI models without firms realizing it. The risk isn’t just hallucinated information — it’s data breaches, violations of legal privilege, and regulatory exposure. ?? The firms getting ahead are the ones treating AI as an asset, not a threat. We’re seeing a shift. Forward-thinking law firms aren’t banning AI — they’re embracing it. They’re embedding AI into workflows safely and strategically, using it to accelerate legal research, contract analysis, and risk detection while keeping client confidentiality intact. ?? The takeaway? Firms have two choices: lead or react. AI-powered legal work isn’t a distant future — it’s happening now. Those who integrate AI with the right guardrails will move faster, deliver greater value, and outpace the competition. The question isn’t if AI belongs in legal — it’s who decides how it gets used? Would love to hear your take — how is your firm approaching AI governance??? #LegalAI #LawFirms #LegalAutomation

'Hopeless'? Potentially handy? How does AI in Legal stack up? ?? Recent research from Linklaters highlights a crucial divide: generalist AI is improving, but it’s still not at the level of even a junior lawyer. The real challenge for law firms? Relying on AI that wasn’t built for legal work. Legal work isn’t just about generating text — it requires precision, accountability, and structured decision-making. AI that integrates into legal workflows — rather than just answering questions — helps lawyers move faster, reduce risk, and ensure quality. The firms getting ahead aren’t using AI as a gimmick. They’re embedding it into structured, process-driven tools that enhance real legal work. How is your firm approaching AI adoption? Are you seeing a shift toward legal-specific AI, or is generalist chat-based AI still dominating the conversation? https://lnkd.in/eBqbbb9t Michael Grupp Micha-Manuel Bues Maximilian Paterson Bero Persons #LegalAI #LawFirms #LegalAutomation
