Attention Orlando voters… In 2002 and again in 2014, Orlando voters approved a half-cent sales tax for school construction and renovation. The sales tax is coming to an end, and voters will be asked to approve a continuation of the tax when you cast your ballots on Nov. 5, 2024. FYI: ? Prior to the implementation of the sales tax, the average age of Orlando schools was 32 years and 3,000 portables were in use throughout the district. Since the passage of the sales tax, 136 schools have been renovated or replaced and the use of portables has been reduced by 75%. Since 2011, 64 schools have been renovated or replaced, far outpacing other school districts in Florida. ? Capital needs for the next 10 years are estimated at $8.9 billion dollars; continuation of the sales tax would generate approximately a total of $4 billion over that period. ? Fifty percent of all Orlando sales tax revenue is paid by tourists or non-residents. ? For every dollar invested in the building program, the positive economic impact to the Central Florida economy is $1.58. #ocps #orlandopublicschools
