On Oct. 1, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) participated in the first and only vice-presidential debate. The event took place in New York City and was hosted by CBS without an in-person audience. The candidates were generally given two minutes to respond to questions, followed by the opportunity to deliver two-minute rebuttals and an additional one minute for clarification or other follow ups. The candidates’ microphones were not muted, breaking from the two presidential debates.

Since 2012, the United States Patent and Trademark Office has provided patent applicants and examiners an opportunity to continue collaborative prosecution after a final rejection has been received through the After Final Consideration Pilot Program 2.0 (AFCP). The AFCP program provided examiners additional search and consideration time and afforded applicants an opportunity for an after-final interview to advance applications to allowance, without requiring additional fees.

Intergeneration Month is held each September to connect and prompt generations from varying age groups to befriend and learn from each other. To honor Intergeneration Month, our CODIE and Karma committees delivered lunches to Warren Village, an organization that provides housing, parent services and early education to empower families to change their life trajectory. A group of volunteers also visited Shalom Park Nursing Home to visit with the elders and help serve lunch.

On Aug. 28–29, 2024, approximately 50 people gathered at the University of California San Diego Extension to learn about the California State Water Resources Control Board’s reissuance of the Construction Stormwater General Permit (2022 CGP). The 2022 CGP became effective on Sept. 1, 2023, although projects covered by the 2009 CGP have until Aug. 31, 2025, to either terminate construction activities or convert to the 2022 CGP.

On Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024, the House and Senate passed the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2025 (H.R. 9747), or the three-month continuing resolution (CR) until Dec. 20, 2024. The CR was adopted by a vote of 341-82 in the House and 78-18 in the Senate. We expect President Biden to sign the legislation well in advance of the Sept. 30, 2024, deadline. Congress is now set to recess until mid-November.
