“The community based approach is essential to the success of the research. Our research aims to inform action and that action will only be impactful and equitable if impacted communities are front and center in all decision-making,” said Mara Freilich, DEEPS Assistant Professor, corresponding author on the study, and PI of the NASA grant.

Starting the new year so fresh and so clean! ??? For her recent UTRA project, Ava Ward '25 tackled the organization and stewardship of the department's field and camping supplies to help DEEPS students gear up for safer, more sustainable adventures. "It was an absolutely amazing experience to work with everyone in DEEPS and see the incredible impact the department’s field trips have on students’ learning. I am so grateful to have had the privilege to work in such a welcoming, fun, and exciting department!" Read more about Ava's project: https://lnkd.in/e7mD4RWy

This week, the eleventh session of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Research Board considered critical developments in Artificial Intelligence for weather forecasting under the leadership of Board Chair Professor Amanda Lynch. An urgent concern was the risk of “fake warnings” during floods, hurricanes, and other disasters that would imperil vulnerable populations. Lynch pressed the imperative of meeting the needs of data-poor countries subject to poor quality weather forecasting products as a matter of international equity.?The annual meeting of the WMO Research Board underscored that access to publicly funded data collection must be ensured as a public good. “In our era of climate change-induced extreme weather events, these are not purely technical matters—they are fundamental to basic human dignity, and indeed survival,” said Professor Lynch. https://lnkd.in/eiSbasP9

This summer, DEEPS Assistant Professor Emily Cooperdock and graduate student Anahi Carrera visited the island of Unalaska to collect samples that will help interpret data from a 2015 NSF GeoPRISMS campaign, as well as pave the way for future research. “When I came in 2015 I thought it would be a once in a lifetime experience," said Cooperdock. “Now to visit again 9 years later, I realize that you never know where Earth Science research will take you. Every time we can visit and collect samples in such a remote place is unique and special.” https://lnkd.in/eqaF3rmW
