关于我们
The Institute at Brown for Environment and Society (IBES) supports research to understand the interactions between natural, human, and social systems. Our teaching programs prepare future leaders to envision and build a just and sustainable world. At this dynamic cross-campus center on Brown University's campus, students and faculty conduct groundbreaking research and build creative solutions to complex 21st-century problems. Our work combines an understanding of the natural world and of human societies because environmental stewardship, human rights, and economic well-being are inextricably linked. Through our unique interdisciplinary approach, IBES fosters actionable research outcomes and the change agents of tomorrow. Our rigorous undergraduate curriculum offers meaningful real-world experiences and unique faculty-student partnerships. IBES faculty and students are leaders in the global conversation about environmental issues – on campus, at the State House, in boardrooms, and at the United Nations.

“In many ways, this project demonstrates what’s possible with persistence and a broader commitment to taking meaningful steps toward a cleaner, more resilient energy landscape,” said Stephen Porder, an IBES professor and Brown's associate provost for sustainability. “It’s impossible to overstate how critical it is for society to accelerate our investment in renewable energy and reduce the need for energy from conventional, polluting sources like gas- and oil-burning power plants. Brown is demonstrating its leadership in the renewable energy movement.”
With final regulatory approval secured on Tuesday, Nov. 19, one of the largest solar energy projects in Rhode Island — Dry Bridge, in North Kingstown — is generating enough power to offset two-thirds of on-campus electricity consumption for Brown University, the project’s exclusive off-taker.

You probably know that coal power plants are bad for the climate and your health. But how much of an impact can one coal power plant have? Where does its pollution go? Find the answer on this week's episode of Possibly, a crossover episode with?Brown University School of Public Health's podcast Humans in Public Health, a monthly podcast about the people behind public health research, hosted by our very own?Megan Hall! Listen to this week's episode of Possibly here: https://lnkd.in/ediRCsHZ And find the full-length episode of Humans in Public Health here: https://lnkd.in/ey3AqKvA

Congratulations to Brown University alumnae Taylor Lanzet (an Environmental Studies concentrator) and Madeline Rotman (a Science & Society concentrator)! “We met on Maddy’s first day of college in an environmental class,” Lanzet told Forbes. “We bonded over our love for cooking, agriculture, and dive bars.” Learn more about their business: https://lnkd.in/e6P-F9Fk
In 2006, Whole Foods Market opened in my hometown of West Orange NJ and my relationship to our food system changed forever. Before Whole Foods, I had never shopped in a grocery store that celebrated farmers, local makers, and the relationship between our food system and the health of our planet. Almost 20 years later, it’s beyond my wildest dreams to launch our Farmhouse Regenerative Organic Certified Vodka & Gin at select?Whole Foods Market?in New Jersey and California! Madeline Rotman and I launched Anytime Farmhouse Gin and Vodka about a year ago to expand organic, regenerative organic, and climate-friendly agriculture into the alcohol aisle, where less than 1% of products sold are organic. Appreciate everyone who helped make this happen —?Taylor Cathala?and the Whole Foods team for making space for sustainable sips and Regenerative Organic Alliance for their frame work and support. Biggest thank you to our farmers and friends at Breathe Deep Farm for growing top-notch grain that is the heart of this product & our friends at McClintock Distilling LLC. & Braeden Bumpers who remain Marylands first and only Certified Organic distillery, running a full grain-to-glass operation, and zero waste facility. Now the most important part, with this election behind us, I remain committed to the work ahead, and while there is much to do, our Anytime world focuses on a couple key principles: climate change is real and climate solutions matter. We need to scale Regenerative Organic agriculture as a global climate solution and invest in the farmers, brands, and people that are bringing these product to the shelf. Go shop for Farmhouse Vodka and Gin at your local Whole Foods!

“Human behavior matters, but also, the climate’s direct effect on virus survival matters,” says Professor Rachel Baker whose recent project has placed the flu virus in a climate-controlled box to study how temperature affects its viability. https://lnkd.in/ePqempyQ

"We’ve been underestimating how unequal climate-related exposures are,” says Professor Allan Just. “Each of us experiences heat in the places where we live, which makes it hard to imagine what it feels like across town. But heat varies MUCH more than we recognize, and we’ve been underestimating how bad it is.”

Hospitals can be hotspots for greenhouse gas emissions. But?Boston Medical Center (BMC)?is part of a movement of hospitals that have cut their emissions by changing which anesthesia doctors use. Listen to the latest episode of Possibly to hear how some types of anesthesia are warming the planet more than others:
